Beyond the whole all out aggression aaarrghhh mood on the surface, its actually a really detailed, well crafted album. They pack a LOT of (fast all over the place not typically melodic chromatic power chords jumping everywhere) riffs into short songs, and they're structured quite smoothly (lots of what amount to actual verse-chorus structures, insert new contrasting riff for bridge with squealing solo, sudden tempo changes bla bla).

Worthwhile to listen closely and pull everything apart, it becomes an oddly elegant as far as relentless half hour assaults go. Perfect album.

It is extreme for its time. Fuck, this borders on death metal... in 1986. Yeah, it's great. Incredibly pacey, and angsty ride compressed into such a small package.

Now I shall reign in blood

Not quite, in 1986 death metal was just really gaining steam (brutal and technical death would come maybe 5 years later or so). Slayer does share some minute stuff with the movement at the time, but yeah.

These are all examples of death metal at the time.

*yawn* I don't get it.

I liked ... a track ... in comparison to the rest of it ... yeah sorry guys you've swayed me on Bob Dylan and Antlers both but this one just hasn't done anything for me.

My favorite Slayer song is still Seasons in the Abyss honestly. But I do like this record.

Enough said, I can't imagine such brutality in 1986. It had to be shocking.

At just under a half hour, this album catches you with a jab and it's all over before you know what hit you. Amazing.
