2009 marked a year where I spent 4 months confined to a bed due to a very severe case of Swine Flu which progressed into life threatening pneumonia. There were times when the doctors thought I wasn't going to make it and so Sufjan's statement here hits a poignant home. This is what drew me io the album in the first place, but growing up, I realised that it's so much more than that. This is Sufjan like we've never seen him. Gone are the thematic allegories to some river in the Illinois countryside or the dark religious parables. Sufjan is emotionally naked and let's out his most human fears. Taking shaky steps to verify who he is with "futile devices," this album then breaks down and experiences a complete rehash of his characteristics, faiths and beliefs. From the explosive electronic distortions of the opening of "Too Much" to the great cacophony clash of the 25 minute" Impossible Soul" I am completely taken in by the sheer underlying honesty of it all. I may not ever make a mark on the world but I'll live my life how Sufjan lives his in this album; fighting to achieve my dreams with every last ounce of my strength.

It's like Sufjan took Illinois and made it more ambitious, interesting and personal, with an electronic direction I can totally dig. My new favourite masterpiece from Sufjan.

Never understood this record. I'll re-listen in a few years, maybe it's too ahead of time for me.

I love this album, not as much as Illinois but still amazing. Would be on my chart if not for OAPA. "Impossible Soul" is the greatest song over 10 minutes ever written (other than a GYBE song or "Only Skin") and maybe in the top 5 songs for the decade.
