yeah, IMO REM is bullshit compared to Modest Mouse. REM has never made as consistent an album as Lonesome Crowded West or Moon and Antartica, and has never made songs as good as Gravity Rides Anything, Trailer Trash, or Wild Pack of Family Dogs

So when you say consistent, I assume you mean all the tracks are great. Sorry, but both of those albums you offer up as flawless masterpieces have filler tracks on them, especially Lonesome Crowded West, which is too long with too much aimless jamming at the end of tracks that don't go anywhere. Also, how many times does Eric Judy play almost the exact same descending bass line on the album? Murmur is 10 times stronger than both of those albums. Also, where do you think part of Modest Mouse's sound comes from? That's what's crazy about this comparison: Most guitar-based indie rock bands that came out in the 90's owe a debt to R.E.M. who were the trailblazers. Finally, Modest Mouse is a good band, but they are not as iconic or influential as R.E.M. is.

when I say consistent, I mean I don't skip through as many tracks as most other albums. There are only three or four albums which I thoroughly enjoy listening to front to back, no skipping tracks; so, when I say an album is consistent in no way means it's flawless (in fact, consistent does not equal flawless in any context). Neither REM nor Modest Mouse have a flawless album.
Secondly, influence ideally has no say and whoever sounds best up front trumps the other. e.g. you can love the Stones and hate Robert Johnston (I mean, every time someone hears classic rock, presumably the immediate thought process is more 'wow this sounds great' rather than 'I like this but can't appreciate it without appreciating the blues-players that came before, even though I may not like said blues-players'). Anyway, to me Modest Mouse trumps REM here. I don't think anyone can argue against Modest Mouse being better produced than REM. I believe Brock is more lyrically talented than Stipe as well. I prefer Brock's voice to Stipe's and I prefer Brock's guitar to Buck's.
bottom line, it's opinion. Which is why I said "IMO REM is bullshit compared to Modest Mouse," and I'm sticking to that

Ah well. I'm fine with REM winning this one. They're both wonderful bands.
