I've changed my mind about 2013. It sucks a lot less than I first though.

BJ The Chicago Kid - the singer who's blessed bangers from Kendrick Lamar and Freddie Gibbs and who was responsible for 2012's excellent Pineapple Now-Laters - has released a free Christmas EP. I'm listening now and it's lovely. Highly recommended to anybody feeling in the spirit right now (or even those that aren't - this might help you get there). Enjoy.

Well, with 2013 ending and the BEAMAs coming up I thought I'd post up a few of the lesser known albums I enjoyed. You can also check out my (still in progress) 2013 chart, which while nowhere near as complete as some others, still could have a few things you might enjoy.
AotY) The Island Come True - L. Pierre

Amazing ambient album from ex-Arab Strap Lucky Pierre. Constant goosebumps throughout, The Island creates a very emotional yet eerie and haunting soundscape. The use of samples is precise, the instrumental bits sparse but delicious, and the whole island "concept" behind it all keeps the thing tied together without becoming annoying, but adding a new dimension to the piece.
1) Ajnabi - Ajnabi
Great post-rock/ambient album from Meccalecca's label. Pretty melodic for the genre, feels kind of like what Kevin Shields would sound if he wasn't doing shoegaze but ambient, IMO. Interesting use of synthesizers and samples.
2) Cover Versions - Andrew Pekler
Heavily sample-based glitch. Evokes many different emotions and attempts varied textures and atmosphere throughout the album. Pekler did a surgical job at editing each and every sample, and piercing the whole thing together. Pretty friendly for a glitch album, still.
3) II - Follakzoid

Catchy chilean space krautrock. Great music for slowing down for a bit, the repetitive, slower tempo has helped me focus on studying through the year. Focus on textures and rhythm more than on melody.
4) Som Sakrifis - Mohammad

Look up the album of the week thread for info about this one. Excellent acoustic drone by the Greek trio.
5) Sky Burial - Rice Cultivation Society

Fun indie folk, with an artsy touch. I know it's mostly a stale genre by 2013, but these guys give it a breath of fresh air. Once again by Meccalecca's own.
6) Hit Vibes - Saint Pepsi

The best of Saint Pepsi's multiple albums this year. Very catchy, very sample heavy dance music. Has a very fun and careless feeling all throughout it.

Now that I'm about to complete my 60's chart, I think I'll go through here for 2013 recommendations.
Plus, the new Phoenix album's pretty good. Not great, but worth it.
