Best "rule?" Put away the MP3 player. Listen to the album on CD...or better yet, vinyl!

I've always enjoyed reading the liner notes and enjoying the cover art of an album as I listen to it. It's a whole experience that you just can't get from an MP3 player.

Anyway, to address the original question: I do like the Deluxe Edition treatment when the bonus stuff is a live concert from the era or an alternate take on the whole album. For instance, I just bought Black Sabbath's Eternal Idol in the Deluxe Edition form. Why? Because on the second disc, it includes the sessions with the original, intended vocalist for that album: Ray Gillen. Pretty cool to hear what might have been. However, just bunch of alternate takes on the same stuff? Blah.
