I mostly find it a sad reminder of how long it's been since they've released anything new.

why should they release anything new if the Internet kiddies are just gonna steal it? they're hanging out on an island somewhere recording music never to be digitized. ever. this computer fad will fade, and they will look across the scorched earth landscape alone with brand new physical media releases.

Well even Lars "Downloading is Evil" Ulrich ate his words on that one after playing in China and realizing how many people had discovered their music through downloading. At 100 bucks plus for a concert ticket, higher end artists seem to be compensating for the lose of revenue.

But...that's a whole other argument. When I think that CCR released three albums in 1969, it's hard to see why it takes today's artists so frigging long to put one album. If it was just downloading, nobody would be producing anything and record labels would be out of business.

That being said, St. Anger and Lulu show that they really can still be innovative under the right circumstances. It's a shame that their immature dudebro fanbase seems to punish them for breaking out of their shell like that, and instead rewards them for enthusiastically reliving their glory days (Metallica: Through the Never) at best, and pooping out their glory days (on this album) at worst.

Part of the reason it takes longer is actually because of the demise in revenue from album sales, which forces artists to spend far more time on the road rather than in the studio. It also takes bands longer to come up with the cash to cover studio time and all of the other costs in producing a record.

And if I remember correctly after listening to John Fogerty on the Howard Stern Show, that was part of CCR's contract back then. Basically the company (or whoever was ripping them off) needed about 100 songs in a period of only a few years. None of the money made from the Creedence recordings went to the band.

Also, back in the day, you could easily get away with putting 35 minutes of music on a record album. Nowadays, people expect CDs to be filled to their 80 minute capacity. A single CD today is like a double album of yesterday.
