A good album, but "So What'cha Want" is the only real standout track for me. I wish they had done a bit more with some of these songs, like "Time for Livin'".

I've never been huge into Beastie Boys but this album is great. One of those albums that as soon as I hear a track from it I know where it's from. Pretty interesting, groove oriented stuff.

I think this was one of the first albums that really helped me appreciate music as art and not just catchy cheese. I was just shy of becoming a teenager when I got this record, and while I already owned To the 5 Boroughs and Licensed to Ill, I was particularly blown away by the variety and creativity across this album. Not only were the hip hop songs gritty and beautifully propelled by various samples and live instruments, but the 70s funk throwback, psychedelic exotica, and hardcore punk tracks piqued my intrigue over the record even further. I simply couldn't get enough of it.

While I currently think Ill Communication, essentially a direct sequel to Check Your Head, is slightly stronger, Check Your Head is the one I appreciated the most back when I was younger and holds the most nostalgic value for me.

Professor! What's another word for pirate treasure?
Well, I think it's booty! That's what it is!
