Two albums I already know. The Underside Of Power is a really good follow up to a great debut. His voice just really suits the post punkish sound. It was already in my 2017 chart, and relistening now confirms it should be there.
But I don't get the fuss about SZA. It bored me.

I like SZA a lot, but if I were to pick an album (I did) which was most representative of the year 2017 (the political climate in particular) it would easily be The Underside of Power.

Wow, this was a tough choice. I liked the SZA record a lot when I first heard it, and liked it even more this time around. However, I'm definitely less of a fan than many of my offline peers, who seem to think that this is AOTY and that she is one of the greatest artists alive. The instrumentals and vocals are indeed outstanding. On the negative side, the lyrics are hit and miss, and the rap verses feel extraneous instead of essential.
The Algiers album was a pleasant surprise. It was a lot more musically diverse and passionate. My favorite songs involved soulful vocals with gospel choirs over trap-influenced beats. I could go for a whole album of that haha. Not every song was a winner, but ultimately I preferred The Underside Of Power to Ctrl. _________________ Add me on RYM
