Definitely Snail Mail. Malkmus is always good or better, but that track is not grabbing me. Maybe a grower.
The Snail Mail track reminds of the 90s in a good way. I think it's one of the better indie pop tracks left in the tournament.
Let's not beat around the bush, Malkmus is winning because middle-aged men objectively make worthier music than teenage girls. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
I love Malkmus, but here it sounds like he's trying to write a mid-paced Pavement song circa Crooked Rain. The song fits in quite well on the excellent Sparkle Hard, but on its own it sounds like second-tier Pavement. It certainly is NOT a bad song though and just misses the heights of his former band.
Pristine on the other hand sounds a lot fresher and vibrant. She DOES sound like a teenage girl (or at least a young women.) And what the fuck is wrong with that?! She brings to indie rock on this song and Heat Wave what Claire Danes & My So Called Life brought to sitcom tv - a realistic and honest portrayal of a teenage girl's perspective which sounds pretty authentic.
I really like both tracks. I just really like what Snail Mail did with Pristine and Heat Wave last year. Just hoping she can conjure up a whole album's worth of this stuff.
Pristine.
Sparkle Hard is definitely the better album though!
