Quote: | And there were less worthy Oscar bait anglophile movies that came earlier. I'll take this one over Shakespeare in Love or Chariots of Fire any day. Maybe Howard's End as well. |
I thought Tom Hooper directed The Theory of Everything but I guess he didn't, but that's definitely another Oscar bait film, same with Eddie Redmayne's other Oscar nominated role in The Danish Girl (which Hooper did direct). Redmayne's win in The Theory of Everything was so disappointing because I think everyone want to see Michael Keaton take that one for Birdman. _________________ Check out some of my other interest on my own review site. And while it didn't make a big deal about the hero's previous position of appeasement, that doesn't mean that speech wasn't a significant event. If anything, the conversion magnifies its meaning. But overall, there were so many other great themes running through that movie that there need not be additional focus on that aspect. |
That's an important aspect! Apparently the movie implies that Edward VI was antifascist the whole time, which wasn't true. This article discusses the historical inaccuracies in depth:

Article does actually suggest that showing Edward VI's political evolution might've made for a better movie, so maybe you're onto something there.

The Broadway Melody, Cimarron, The Greatest Show on Earth, Gigi, Around the World in 80 Days, Oliver!, Chariots of Fire, Driving Miss Daisy, Braveheart, Shakespeare in Love, A Beautiful Mind, and Crash stand out to me as the worst Best Picture winners. I find next to nothing enjoyable about any of the aforementioned films, and it stings much worse as in most of these cases, the entire rest of the short list are far better films.
