They put Gucci in a cell, then Madea went to jail, I make music, I make movies, I need Tyler Perry sales...
Always been underwhelmed by Big Boi's solo ventures, but this song gets it right. [/i] _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.

OK with both but not too excited by either. Went with Big Boi as it felt a bit more vibrant.

Looks like all three of my hip-hop nominees are on the way to a first-round exit. Pour a sip on the concrete for the deceased. And yet again, it's to a song I also regard as near-perfect (and like Maps, considered nominating). So I can't begrudge any of the individual results, even if I mourn the overall phenomenon that when two songs of comparable stature enter, the rap song leaves.
So why did I nominate this single from late 2009? First, the beat is simply incredible. Cutmaster Swift flips a great sample into a beat that is somehow at once palatial and buttery smooth, captures the soulfulness of the source material, is distinctively southern in its musical points of reference within hip-hop, and knocks hard as hell.
Big Boi and Gucci Mane ride the beat flawlessly. They are both in near-top form in terms of flows and bars, and while said bars might not be of the 'spiritual lyrical miracle' variety, that doesn't make them any lesser. _________________ Add me on RYM

Def. Big Boi's work since has been bizarrely uneven, but that album's a banger. Probably in my top 25 hip-hop releases of the decade. I think it was also the first hip-hop album I ever bought on wax... also one of the first albums I illegally ripped to a CDr. (vinyl's still on the shelf, think I've tossed the disc since though).
Shine Blockas is a highlight, but the streak from Follow Us to Hustle Blood is underappreciatively solid. Insane knowing he hopped in the studio nearly 13 years ago to start it, time flies...
Just a pity it's up against Fake Empire. _________________ Submit Your List for BEA's 2023 Film Poll!
