Yet another "song" proclaiming allegiance to a shit life and rationalizing selling poison and playing a part in the death trade.

Yeah, really great stuff there. Something to be really proud of.

That's a little insensitive towards those who make a living selling drugs :/

There's a clear and obvious difference between observation and glorification, but it does always make me laugh when a specific brand of middle class, middle aged, white males - who, coincidentally or otherwise, often enjoy the music of Rush - fail to grasp this, scoffing at the concept of nuance whilst secretly wishing those black folks would simply accept their lot, work in factories or fast food joints, pledge allegiance to the American dream, and stop getting so darn uppity (in before "but I like jazz so I can't be racist"). Freddie Gibbs grew up in Gary, Indiana in the 1980s and 1990s, when it was famously known as the murder capital of the United States, and it would be disingenous of him to tell anything but his truth. He is clearly aware of the perils of the drug trade, as evidenced in just about every lyric of the song, whilst still being proud that he was able to make something of himself in spite of the significant obstacles, walking a tightrope between tragedy and triumph at all times. That said, I do understand that somebody who is otherwise used to listening to Neil Peart's 6th grade, objectivist, cliché-ridden, sci-fi babble might struggle to acknowledge (or even notice) the genuine humanity and subtlety in Gibbs' work, given that he lives and writes in the grey areas where good people do questionable things, and vice versa, and there isn't a malevolent "baddie" to rail against. Maybe - just maybe - if the American government had actually offered people in poor, often black communities better opportunities, instead of secretly encouraging the drug trade in those areas in order to feed its privatised, profit-driven prison system, then we wouldn't need songs like 'Thuggin'' to point out the nature of the game and what it does to individuals, families, and communities on a day-to-day basis. It amazes me that seemingly educated people still fail to grasp this, and instead blame the oppressed for their own plight.
