I had forgotten how great CD was sounding comparing to vinyl

Out of pure nostalgia, I bought myself a vinyl turntable some months ago and surprisingly, I realized that the sound was quite narrow, dimmed, scratchy.
I then remembered that the spacious and clear CD sound was a real upgrade!

Do you truly think vinyl sounds great ?
Am I confusing with the question of loudness and dynamic range compression that (progressively) started with the digital era?

PS:
1/the material I bought was of fairly good quality and rather powerful (with a separate amplifier)

Well recorded and well mastered music sounds better on CD. The crap mastering has nothing to do with the medium.. The problem with early CD reissues was with labels not using the master tape for the reissues. But yeah, I own some poorly mastered albums (The White Stripes’ Elephant sounds especially heinous, for example. It clips like crazy) that make me wish I had bought the album on vinyl.

The main problems with micro groove vinyl is the groove width limiting bass response, and the slower speed. Shellac 78s had better fidelity than vinyl. If you ever get a chance to listen to some high fidelity 78s from the late 50s, check them out. The surface noise (and a lot of surface damage from needle use) can actually be eliminated by using a laser player, but there’s only one company from Japan that makes them, and they cost a fortune.
