- Post subject: 2020 albums rising more slowly on overall chart?
|
This isn't a "suggestion" or a problem per se, just curiosity about the rate of progression of 2020 albums up the overall chart as compared to past years.
When the algorithm was overhauled at the beginning of this year, did it have an effect on how quickly newer albums rise on the overall chart? It wasn't until this weekend (the second weekend of August) that we saw 10 albums from the current year in the overall top 10,000 (and four of those have entered within the last week), and the #1 album (Fetch the Bolt Cutters) is still outside the top 5,000. By this time in 2019 there were 14 albums on the overall chart, and not only were three of those already in the upper half, but Titanic Rising and Igor were inside the top 3,000.
I don't think anyone would view that as an indication that last year's albums are that much better than this year's. As I said, just curious about whether the statistical changes affecting the overall chart have had an impact on how scoring progresses for current albums.

I think it’s because those 2019 albums rose that high on the strength of points from decade charts. Decade charts don’t exist for the 2020s yet. _________________ Add me on RYM

Thanks! I hadn't even thought of this, and it makes sense.
