Why Life After Death is considered so far 'behind' this album has always come across as slightly odd. Ten Crack Commandments, Notorious Thugs, Kick In The Door, You're Nobody ('Til Somebody Kills You), Sky's The Limit, I Got A Story To Tell, etc... all great cuts.

I was going to say that, at least personally, I knock a few points off Life After Death because of the double album bloat. But actually Life After Death is only about 40 minutes longer so it's not like it's twice as long as this one. Still, as great as most of the tracks are it still has stuff like Playa Hater and Nasty Boy that should have been cut. The tracks you mentioned as as well as What's Beef, Going Back to Cali, and I Love the Dough more than make up for it though.

Biggie is my choice for greatest rapper ever, even if he's not my favorite. That's usually a distinction I don't like to make but I don't think anyone combined his skill for rhyming and storytelling with such an intimidating presence and the ability to fit into so many different flows without losing a step. Tom Breihan wrote a piece about Life After Death and mentioned that "Notorious Thugs" shows Biggie would have been able to hang with changes in hip hop styles, which I think is a really interesting point. That versatility isn't on display as much here but it's still incredible that an album this long is mostly free of duds (and the main ones are skits). An absolute classic and one of my favorite rap albums. And for my money a better and more impressive debut album than Illmatic; Illmatic is fantastic and really benefits from its brief running time, but I think this one flips the script and becomes great because of how much impressive rapping it contains.

'Playa Hater' is fucking genius. You're tripping.

EDIT: Also, 'Nasty Boy' has such a great beat. The hook isn't perfect, but it's a minor quibble.

One of my most sacrilegious music takes as someone from the east coast is that while Biggie had better raw rapping ability, neither of his albums came close to this:

Me Against The World by 2Pac

This, All Eyez On Me, and especially The Don Killuminati are all masterpieces, but with a gun to my head I'd still - probably, just about, if I absolutely had to - take Biggie's two albums over those three. Might wake up feeling differently about that tomorrow, though. Not sure it's sacrilege, mind. 2Pac is so iconic that the whole world owns him.
