Man I absolutely adore this album. "Fight Test" is better than "Father and Son", don't @ me.
Maybe this album is a little tamer than most of the Lips' other albums, and maybe they didn't succeed on everything they attempted here, but damn if it doesn't all fit together wonderfully. While I know that the Lips do not consider this to be a concept album, I still feel like I've been able to gather a story out of the whole thing. Something like the Orpheus and Eurydice myth I guess? I'm not so great at following the story in well-known intentional concept/rock opera albums like Tommy, The Wall, or American Idiot, so my interpretations may always be off-base.
Whatever, point is that this album is great. It's always hovered in my top 25 or so, and I still love it dearly. _________________ 51 Washington, D.C. albums!

I actually agree. I love the lyrics to that song and the chorus has sweet melody.

The Lips were the masters of existential indie pop at this point. That said, I haven't revisited this album in yonks.

We all have our opinion. I find personally the Soft Bulletin better and more consistent than Yoshimi. They are two great albums in their ways, they offer a different vibe. To me Yoshimi is more a roller coaster of highs and lows. The sound is generally more refined but it lacks the "rawness" of SB which I really like!

Agreed. I think Soft Bulletin sounds more playful, whereas Yoshimi is the band streamlining their sound. That said, it's still one of my top 3 or 4 Lips records. _________________ http://jonnyleather.com

I agree with all of this. That said, while I think SB is more consistent, Yoshimi's highs are even higher, and its lows aren't much lower, so it's very hard for me to pick between the 2. _________________ 51 Washington, D.C. albums!

I agree, the highs are even higher. "Fight Test", "Do you realize?? and the very end of "One More Robot/Sympathy 3000-21" always give me massive goosebumps!
My favorite song of all (call me unoriginal) is still "waitin for a superman" though.

I feel this record has some absolutely standout melodies on top of, of course, some pretty top notch production and sound-play. _________________ Attention all planets of the solar federation: We have assumed control.
