this album felt like a bit of a decline for the band, but i've never been able to finger down why. that's not to say i don't love the album. on their own, the songs all have merit, but the album as a whole tires on me pretty quickly. perhaps the production is a little too stuffy? _________________ follow me on the bandcamp.

The drum sound is definitely more pop-style than on previous MM records, especially the snare drum sound, but the real difference is Johnny Marr, isn't it? He's much more technically skilled and "intricate" than the previous guys (Dann Gallucci, John Wickhart, Ben Blankenship, etc.), but more to the point, he plays a Fender Jaguar about 90% of the time and you can definitely hear it. It's a more "surfy" sound with more definition on the high-end.
I doubt that my own background with MM's stuff is in any way typical, but I bought a copy of Lonesome Crowded West around the time it came out (people were comparing them to XTC for some reason) and I thought it was "just okay," and I didn't buy anything else of theirs until this album came out. I picked this one up mostly because Johnny Marr was on it, so this is probably the album of theirs that I've listened to the most (i.e., more than twice). That's probably why I don't really mind the difference in the sound, along with the fact that I also like Fender Jaguars. I could probably say this is my favorite MM album, but that's not really saying much, I guess!
