I totally disagree. And Grohl, indebted as he and Nirvana were to punk rock music should disagree too. That's a totally ordinary, demagogic speech to do.

I love how controversial this entire speech is Laughing Either people are dumb enough to not understand it, or they're too caught up with defending electronic music, or you agree with parts of it, or they're punk fans, or they think the Foo Fighters suck, or they're Skrillex fans, etc....

It's really interesting to watch Razz

He recently 'cleared up' what he meant by that speech, and he basically just elaborated on how he likes electronic music.

But. The real question here,

Is a 'laptop' an instrument? Think

I wouldn't think of myself as fitting any of the categories you quote, and I still think this speech is nothing spectacular really, and easy to disagree with.

However, I'll agree that it's an interesting quote to discuss, and I quite enjoy reading this thread.

Well, if the definition of "instrument" can somehow not be too far from the definition of "tool" (and in my mind those two words are close somehow), a laptop is an instrument. If anything that you use to do something can be called an instrument, anything that you use to make music can be called a musical instrument I guess. Voice is sometimes referred to as an instrument I think. The difference would be that laptops weren't invented specifically to play music, but then again the programs you'll use were, so...

I would agree that I find it stupid when people say, well it's good because they use real instruments. Or if an artists does anything digital- a painting, a drawing - old disney vs pixar. My sister is one who just thinks anything done with a computer doesn't have the same worth as anything done by hand----- which is total crap.

I love the Foo Fighters. If they came out with an electronic album, i'd embrace it because I know they are true artists. Electronic or not, bad artists make crap material.
