And yes, if I should pick an album then it would be Odessey and Oracle. Criminally underrated, it wasn't even famous at that time. The Zombies were generally overlooked.
The Incredible String Band is also a good example, their first two albums were brilliant, there wouldn't be the debut album by Zeppelin without their 1968 LP Hangman's Beautiful Daughter.
I'd mention The Pretty Things' S.F. Sorrow too. An incredibly good album. It was recorded at the same time with Piper and Pepper at the Abbey Road studios, and it was the first rock opera, which inspired Tommy.
There is also a girl group (I don't really care about girl groups generally) The Cake which existed between 1966 and 1968. They were the first girl - teenager girls aged 16-18!! - group who wrote most of their own songs, were famous for their beautiful acapella singing and who were also famous for splitting with the typical spectoresque girls group style. They were unique and G. Harrison also said that they could have been the next big hit if they didn't break up.
According to some guy on YouTube, John Lennon once said 96 Tears by ? and the Mysterians was the greatest song of all-time. Of all-time.
John Lennon also spent about 90% of his life tripping balls so I'd take anything he said with a grain of salt.
Still - you have to admit it's an exceptional song.
If we could talk exceptional songs by bands that aren't brought to mind much, The Cascades' Rhythym of the Falling Rain is one of my favorite underrated tunes of the decade (not then, I mean now - how many people know of it?)
Kinks underrated? Please, they were still making hits in the early 80s - Ray Davies was THE MAN. And the Moody Blues were still a big name when I was a kid...don't know about these days I suppose. _________________ <(: @ >
