I know you can have 10/10, 100/100 etc. but that's not what I'm talking about. What I mean is how do you all give albums a score out of 100 on this site?

For me, there is a general criteria I tend to give for albums, which can be summarised by a one word description that's written first:

The factors for my rating of an album, in order of importance:
Number of songs not enjoyable.
Number of songs that are great (above 80, rated similarly to album rating).
Flow.
Do I need to be in a specific mood to listen?
Length (eg. too long/short).

100- Perfect. All of the above.
90- Incredible. One of the above factors missing.
80- Great. Two factors missing.
70- Very Good. Three factors missing.
60- Good. Four factors missing.
50- Average. Some factors done to some extent.
40- Quite Bad. Maybe a couple of songs liked.
30- Bad. Maybe one song liked.
20- Terrible. Maybe one slightly redeeming factor (eg. a good guitar solo).
10- Horrendous. Nothing good.
0- Utter Garbage. Torture to listen to. Although, I don't think I would ever give an album this rating.

Although it's not really set in stone, and it obviously differs between genres.

As you can probably tell by this I am a very harsh marker of albums- albums that get 70 out of 100 get into my chart. That's because these albums are compared, relatively, to my top two albums, which are rated 100 and 99.6/7 respectively. I've only rated my top five albums 100, as they are rounded up to 100, and then 6-14 on my chart are 95.

However, I feel like this is a good way to show my tastes in music, because it shows to what extent I enjoy a certain album very clearly.

Anyway, how about you?

If I like the album I rate it 100/100 if I don't like it then I don't rate it.

In general, I rate them the following way :

100 : top 5.
95 : absolutely fantastic, I think I may have my 6-25 or something rated like this.
90 : totally excellent, this rating may go from 25 to 50, maybe.
85 : exceptionnally good, that's the minimum rating for an album to feature on my chart.
80 : very good.
75 : good.
70 : OK.

After that, I give kinda random ratings, mostly based on feeling. Anyway, if I rate an album below 70, then I don't really like it, so I don't really care.

But my ratings are like my chart, they're not ultra-precise. They're mostly a way to express quickly how I feel about an album. If I really have something to say about it, then I comment.

I rate albums that I love 90-100/100, depending on how much I love it. Everything else is relative to that. There's no real science behind it. I saw someone comment the other day that they could only think of 40 or 50 albums that they "love". That must be depressing as fuck. I've never tried to count, but I reckon I love about ten times that amount of albums. People need to be more willing to love stuff. Makes life funner.

Every album on my overall chart is rated 90-100 as these are the albums that I love the most, however there are plenty of albums I love and can't get anywhere near my top 100, yet they're still rated 80+.

More or less this:

100- Perfect / Not perfect maybe, but undying, long-lasting love relationship
90- Excellent.
80- Very good.
70- Good / Very interesting
60- Above average / Interesting / Well done in a style that doesn't much appeal to me
50- Average. Sounds OK, no standouts / No disagreeable, nothing much to remember
40- Below par. Not insufferable, but really flawed / Interesting move, but fails
30- Bad.
20- Very bad.
10- Godawful.
I don't generally rate 0, cause it's never taken into account Smile

For my charts :

Overall chart contains only my favourites.
Decade charts contain only 90-100/100 albums.
Year charts contain only 70-100/100 albums.
Theme charts contain only 70-100/100 albums.

I might do this sometime soon

100 - Worth an infinite amount of listens - absolutely refuses to get old
90 - It holds a unique place for me and/or I listen to it frequently
50 - Solid album that might lack that something extra and/or it is worth at least occasional listening
25 - Not my stuff, but I can understand its appeal and/or I might've been able to hear it all at least once
5 - I don't get it whatsoever and I am unable to finish listening to it

I think the albums at the lower end of my top 100 are 85-90, so anything 80 or above is a fantastic album for my system. 70-80 is still very good, with just a little something missing I suppose. 60-70 is slightly above average but nothing special. And once I'm in the 50's down it's not something I've enjoyed much at all.

But like Lethal said there's no real science to my system, no particular factors I analyze to determine the number I give it and where I rank it overall in my favorite albums. It's totally a gut thing. If I enjoyed the hell out of it, the rating will reflect it. As enjoyment descends, so then does the rating.

As a side note/question, (this may have been discussed before and I just forget) how many albums have you guys rated a perfect 100? My top 8 I have rated at 100, the only 8 on the site I've rated as such.

I currently have 27 rated 100.
There are some that could be reevaluated down soon and others that could be changed up to 100.

Only 5 100s here because I'm very reluctant to give out perfect scores since it's rare to find an album without a single weak moment.

Otherwise, I consider everything I rate between 95 and 75 great to excellent. Those albums might end up on one of my charts.
60-75 are for albums that didn't impress me but weren't outright terrible.
50-55 are forgettable.
Everything below 50 are albums I disliked.

It's not a perfect system but at least it works for me.
