I wish genre's were easier for me to put my finger on ... *sigh* My chart's a mess because I have to go "Well it's these four things with a bit of this but it was marketed as this totally different thing but my second cousin twice removed said it was this other thing". Not literally. But pretty close. This could be interesting, though, I guess I'm just a little confused on what we're actually ... you know ... doing. _________________

Just to hopefully clarify the point of all this, Happymeal created a thread for Celtic Music Recs this morning & the following exchange happened…
Happymeal wrote: | (perhaps this would fit better in the recommendations thread than a thread of its own, but whatevs). |
RepoMan wrote: | Actually, I love this idea!!! EVERY genre should get its own recommendation thread and that way when you're in the mood for some stoner metal, or 60s folk music, or late 70s- 80s post-punk, you can just weave your way through the apropos thread & pick up some nuggets. Each thread over time could build into a treasure trove. If this panned out and was semi-organized and/or searchable, I could see a lot of people coming to this site for these genre specific threads alone. |
Thanks Happymeal for spearheading this!!!
Here are my three genre recs…
60s folk rock (e.g. Bert Jansch, John Fahey, Dylan)
late 70s - mid 80s post-punk (e.g. PIL, The Feelies, Wire, The Fall)
90s post-Hardcore (e.g. Unwound, Fugazi, Refused)

As an addition, we'll also be discussing the genre itself within the thread (if peeps want to do that that is) as to decide what constitutes a particular album being within that genre, which album best represents the sound, and etc. This is to at least get a community sense of what we're doing. However, the main objective is finding recommendations for genres people want more to know about/people want to hear more.
EDIT: Also, perhaps these genre threads with recommendations might show what a genre actually encompasses and might get rid of misconceptions of it.

I would love to see a guide on here that introduces the most popular albums of a genre. There have been times when I wanted to try something new, but I didn't know where to look. The guide could include five or ten albums per genre and suggest related genres. Here is an example:
Indie Rock
also try post-punk, indie folk, and indie pop
Pixies - Doolittle (1989)
Guided by Voices - Bee Thousand (1994)
Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (1994)
Built to Spill - Perfect From Now On (1997)
...
The discussion threads could be a great place to develop the lists.

I'll nom Krautrock, Jazz Fusion & Electric Blues. _________________ "And can’t you see you’re in on it?

How about instead of krautrock we have one "experimental 60's/70's"
encompassing Berlin School, avant, prog,Art, experimental rock and all the other miscellaneous "experimental"stuff like Minimalism, Musique concrète,Modern Classical

I think that'd be too broad. _________________ "Drink beer, smoke pot, and create something that will storm heaven. That's all I ever really cared about." - Ron House

Seconded, I'm thinking the point of this is to be specific so as to fully flesh out a single subgenre.

I guess u guys are right that defeats the purpose of focusing on a single sub genre. We can tackle 1 subgenre at a time would be better.

In most cases, there is no clear-cut genre definition (a) and to complicate things most albums fall into multiple genres (b). For instance: krautrock encompasses jazz rock, psychedelic rock, kosmik music, progressive rock, experimental rock, and many more. On the other hand (b) an album like Tago Mago for instance may be cataloged as krautrock, experimental rock, psychedelic rock, even seen it listed as progressive rock. The point is this: as we are doing this, an album may very well fall into different genres - this is very valid (fewer albums fall into a single clear cut genre). If you feel up to doing "experimental 60's/70's" go for it but I wouldn't attach any time-frames to it (60's/70's); I would just call it experimental rock (specific to rock) or avant-garde (more general). _________________ "And can’t you see you’re in on it?
