None of the awards, critics, lists, charts, including BEA, are perfect. Nevertheless, the Grammies are still the top awards in recorded music (at least in the USA). They are not based upon sales but on nominations and subsequent votes of the members of NARAS.

The GRAMMYs are the only peer-presented award to honor artistic achievement, technical proficiency and overall excellence in the recording industry, without regard to album sales or chart position.
That last sentence is a joke, right? Artistic achievement, technical proficiency and overall excellence in recording is everything the Grammies is NOT about. Any award where Katy Perry is nominated for the highest honor is not really an award.
