Well I come from a country that most of you haven't even heard of, much less heard the music from it.. So in this way, yes - I am more aware of the Slovenian (and ex-yugoslavian) music than pretty much any other person who doesn't live in this area.. Also, I guess that US/UK/Aussie people are more aware of the artists from their country, though the difference is that those artists are performing in a language that most people understand + the well known and commercially successful artists in these countries are also well known in the rest of the world, while the good Slovenian (or even ex-yugoslavian, ie Serbian, Croatian,...) won't be heard worldwide, even if they are really good or super popular in their countries...
Oh and I guess if it's true that people have more of their countries' artists in their chart, then I think the word "hyper-aware" is about right..

Are we missing out on other nation's classics because we don't live in that country?

I won't try and pretend that my country produces heaps of great music or anything... Far from it. But I do have 7 albums on my chart that come from countries of Ex-Yugoslavia (1 is from Slovenia) and I'm sure that if people had listened to these albums + other classics from this area, they would discover at least some music they would like.. But obviously it's hard for non-english bands to get recognized outside of their countries.. Is it just the language? OK maybe with stuff like hip-hop it def. is, but looking at Sigur Ros' (among others) case, I'd still say no.. It is definitely harder for non-english bands to achieve worldwide popularity though and before they do that it's obvious that most people wouldn't have heard of them.. Even in the age of the interwebs Smile

Language is a problem of course. The general quality of Swedish pop is mediocre at best, but there are some artists that I believe are right up there with the best: Peps Persson, Cornelis Vreeswijk, Timbuktu, Bo Kaspers Orkester, Lars Demian, Lars Winnerbäck, Ebba Grön...All of these, however, are most likely highly uninteresting for anyone who does not understand Swedish as in all the cases their lyrics are an important reason why they are good.

Based on that I would conclude that I am missing out on a lot of interesting music in languages that I do not speak well enough to understand the subtleties of it.

I spent 2 weeks in Slovenia 2 years ago (orchestral music tour + tourism).
It's a very welcoming country and I honestly think you're rather lucky to live there.

The only slovenian band I heard bits of over there is Laibach. Interesting industrial-influenced music which I had promised myself to dig into once back (which I haven't yet Confused ) . But will do...

I'm probably missing out on some interesting stuff. But then again the only band from where I live that's known is Social Distortion. There is a indie label here, but the bands on it mostly play jam/reggae stuff like that, which I'm not really into.

Yeah, Laibach are probably the most well known band worldwide that comes from Slovenia, though they're not that popular in Slovenia I feel.. I don't really think that highly of them either, but they're certainly interesting

However, there still seems a barrier with 'foreign language' music and it seems more of a problem when it is 'pop' or 'rock' for bands to cross-over into the mainstream - how many non-English speaking rock-bands can you think of in the English-speaking mainstream?

Agree, language is not much of a problem in classical/operatic music. Spanish is becoming popular in the USA thanks to immigration (legal and illegal). Of course, language isn’t a problem with instrumental music either, e.g., jazz and big band.

International bands don't really get famous unless they use english vocals. Take Mariah carey, she used to release french only albums and only found fame in her homeland Canada. Se started singing in English and bam, one of the biggest selling musical artists in the world.
