The change might be better for those people who rate albums differently on RYM (for example) and BEA - what I mean by this is, they use percents on this site, and actual grades on the other site. Example: over 90 (%) is a 5-star grade on the other site, below 50 on this site is a one star rating, etc.. I don't know if people actually do that though, but I guess it is possible...
I still wouldn't change it though: different sites use different rating systems; P4k for example uses the 0-10 scale, specific to one decimal point, some sites use the 4 star, other 5 star scales, some even use letter-grades (is that how you call them?).. I don't know how many sites are there where fans rate the albums, but I think that they aren't all the same; and it's good to have some diversity
Dunno, or I just got used to this rating scale...
As for the interpretation of the ratings - I personally don't mind that there isn't much emphasis on ratings, as this site's overall ranking of the albums isn't determined by them (the ratings are more like a "bonus" feature).. But I guess if you want to put some sort of indicator, you could do the same as for the tracks, where the top rated are "marked"..
Sorry if that was a bit incoherent, hope you get my point

I wouldn't mind having 5 stars with a 20 point sliding scale. I mean when you get down to deciding if an album is 87 or 88 material it really comes down to how you're feeling about it that day, so people shouldn't mind if what we have is somewhat simplified. And it would conform to other critical sources

I think having terms for certain brackets (i.e 80-85 or 40-50 whatever) could work quite well.

That's not a bad idea as it would also give some sort of standard for rating. As it is now 90 to someone is not the same thing as 90 to someone else. My ratings on the site look roughly as follows (putting it into words is necessary to make it anything other than a pointless number):
100 - Divine (the term works whether you believe in a divinity or not)
95 - Masterpiece
90 - Brilliant
85 - Excellent
80 - Great
75 - Very good
70 - Good
65 - Pretty good
60 - Alright
55 - Mediocre
50 - Bordering on bad (or at least highly uninteresting)
45 - Bad (or very highly uninteresting)
40 - Very bad
35 - Very, very bad
30 - Awfully bad
25 - Annoyingly bad
20 - Miserable
15 - Annoyingly miserable
10 - Complete crap
5 - Utterly, utterly useless piece of unbelievable junk (no album I rated ever got this low yet)

No, The Flaming Lips are better than both The Radioheads and Joy Division. Other than that it is about right.

some interesting things to consider, I quite 19loveless91's idea of flagging top-rated albums similarly to track-picks:

I think this would help provide an extra cue to help a first-time visitor "get" how well-rated an album is without needing to look at another reference point such as the top-rated chart.

As well, a scale similar to Bork's could act as an aid to a user when assigning a rating (for example, a tooltip or something could be shown when you hover over each star section when making a rating).
This could be a slightly contentious idea as different people will use a different rating methodology but if BEA did this, it might help to reduce the number of 0-10 and 80-100 ratings that we get (not many people rate between those boundaries - it's either people like something or they don't).
