I don't feel like artists like Pink Floyd for the 70s should be used because they are so exceptional they don't really describe the other music. Even Fleetwood Mac is pushing it... Just my feelings on the matter...

P.S. I guess I wasn't alive in the 70s but they had good music

OK here's a challenge:

50s:

Elvis
James Brown
Ella Fitzgerald
Chuck Berry
Johnny Cash

60s:

Beatles
Bob Dylan
Stones
Aretha Franklin
Jimi Hendrix

70s:

Pink Floyd
David Bowie
Kate Bush
Black Sabbath
Stevie Wonder

(Shit! no Led Zep! And no Neil Young. Jeez Louise!)

80s:

The Cure (Woo!)
Michael Jackson
Smiths
Duran Duran
Madonna

90s:

U2
Radiohead
Nirvana
Smashing Pumpkins

[Betty Boo (no just kiddin'!!)]

R.E.M.

And as everyone with any sense knows there is no good music after the 90s!!!

Just kidding again

00's:

NSYNC
Backstreet Boys
Britney Spears
Christina Aguilera....

Ha ha! Joking again!!

Real 00's:

Travis
Coldplay
2Pac
Bjork
Eminem (although his latest album is crap)

10's:

Kanye
Lady Gaga
Rihanna (first five years or so not her recent stuff)
Twenty One Pilots
The 1975

no mention of Sonic Youth for the '80s? I feel like they capture no wave, hardcore (SST connections), rock-classical fusion (Branca, Previte), left of the dial type music better than anyone else. Would def pick them as more decade defining than REM or The Smiths

Maybe the Eagles for the 70s? They seemed to really be writing what everyone else was... Dunno.. Need to listen to more Eagles. I just think its silly to say Pink Floyd captured the spirit of the era considering no other band could be like Pink Floyd. Then again, maybe there will be another Greta Van Fleet for Pink Floyd (rather than Zep)

That’s why I didn’t play with the ‘80s.

Madonna? MJ? If that’s what’s most representative of the decade, the decade deserves to be maligned. Actually, there was plenty of great music to be had; it jus wasn’t what was getting the most sales or the most ink... not unlike today if you think about it.
