Yeah, the Trent Reznor thing really shocked me, also. I wouldn't have guessed that one. I teach three different classes of history and the two students that picked him weren't even in the same class and I don't think they're good friends...so, yeah...shocker.
When I asked this, I figured I'd get a lot of the rap and pop stars that are currently on the charts. It's really nice to see how many of those students actually have sought out older music.
When I was a seventh grader, just about everything I listened to was older stuff that I was introduced to by guys down at the local record shop and through the older siblings of friends. I certainly never was a "parrot" to my parents' taste in music. My mother liked Tom Jones and Johnny Mathis and my dad stuck to his "truckin'" songs on 8-track tapes.
By the way, the student that chose Frank Zappa is a really great kid. Very intelligent. I can see where he'd "get" Zappa. I have an old poster for a Frank Zappa / Alice Cooper show from 1972. I think I'll bring it in and hang it on my wall and see what he says.
I have to commend my school for their music program. Everyone...and I mean everyone...plays an instrument. We have a partnership with a local university and that's how we got all of the instruments. So, there's a lot of students in those classes that are very into music. There are lots of guitar players and lots of percussionists. Hmmmm...maybe we'll get a few bands out of this program.
Right now, in my history class, I have to teach about the "significant cities of the United States" as part of the state's geography standards. As we study each city, I've been showing YouTube clips of music that came from those areas and from different eras. So, they got to see some Seattle grunge, Washington go-go, San Francisco psychedelia, New York punk, Detroit Motown, New Orleans jazz, L.A. metal, etc. They have REALLY responded to it and it's made learning about the cities a lot of fun for the students. I'm really happy that I've included that part of it this year. _________________ Speakers of the House DJ

That's great to hear about your schools music program.
Maybe a band will come out of your school and bring back the real rock and roll

Or in other words...there is still hope for the new generation.
This was an uplifting story by the way. Thanks for sharing it.

Everyone plays an instrument?
Better than my school's, we have about 20, maybe 30, instrument players out of 860 people.

I don't understand the surprise at NIN being mentioned
He was huge at my school among the musically orientated kids and I absolutely Identify him with my college years (around 15 - 17)
