Dylan any day and twice on Wednesdays. While Neil Young is clearly talented I have never been able to listen to him without disliking, as someone said, that high pitched whiny tone he sings in. A song now and then is great but listening to a whole Neil Young album from start to finish always ends up being something of a painful experience.
Wait. Isn't Joy Division one of your favorite bands? I wouldn't say Ian Curtis is one of the great rock singers of all time either. Anyways, good singing is overrated. The best singers to me have unique voices, not amazing one's. Both of these singers have very distinct voices.
It's a very interesting match up. You have two singer songwriters who have had good periods and bad periods, both have played solo and with rock bands, both have done their share of experimenting, and amazingly at their ages are still making music. What it comes down to for me is comparing their good periods and good albums. Neil Young has maybe been a bit more consistent than Dylan over the years, but to me, most of Young's best output ranges from good to great, whereas, Dylan's best work is phenomenal, and he has created more iconic albums and songs that have stood the test of time. Therefore, it's Dylan for me. For example, I don't think Young ever matched Dylan's lyrical ability.
