@Charicature - When you say defining the decade of rock and roll, do you mean that these songs defined rock and roll in each decade? Or did you just use the "rock and roll" part instead of saying "music from 1950s onwards" - I'm curious because of your picks for 1970s and 80s (defined the decade perhaps, but not very RnR)
Can't think of any 1950s song, haven't really listened much of this decade.

You're overthinking this Wink

I know there's a lot of leeway to interpret this, but I was kind of going for the song that most definitively defines everything about the decade. And yes, from the era of RnR, not necessarily RnR songs.

Sorry, couldn't do just one song per decade Embarassed .. I'll think about it and come back. The ones above were from the top of my head.

I know, it's pretty hard to boil the decade down into one song...but that's the challenge of this exercise.

I copuldn't do just one song, for example in the early 80's that would mean ignoring either R&B/pop or new wave/post punk.

You're cheating Wink One song per decade...really push yourself.

Think

Interesting to see that Smells like Teen Spirit basically has a monopoly on the 90s.

I'd say that this song defines the grunge movement and the alternative scene of the late 1980s. Hard to say it defines the whole 1990s, but it's a fitting candidate
