(I wonder why this wasn't brought up at any point. Wink)

Also Andy Warhol was a talentless hack, although I am probably just saying that because of my hatred of pop art anyway

I'm a big fan of both bands. I think both are extremely influential and important, but I can only moan and groan when I come across this argument. This argument is not only completely wrong, it's a good reason to hate hipsters. When someone makes this argument, they are basically saying that the only kind of rock that is worth anything is of the alternative persuasion (punk, post-punk, indie, etc) If it appeals to a mass audience at all, or as soon as it appeals to a mass audience, it's garbage. How closed minded, how boring! But even that argument has its problems because there's a very good chance that your favorite indie rock band have been influenced by both The Velvet Underground and The Beatles either directly or indirectly. People that make this argument are either trying to reinvent history or refuse to see the whole picture. It's willful ignorance, and I have no time for it.

It's OK to not like the Beatles, but to try to diminish their legacy is classic hipster revisionism. It's become a cliche and predictable as saying The Beatles are the greatest band of all time. It's funny. I love indie rock, as a genre, but people who exclusively listen to it, or more to the point, adopt a rigid holier that thou stance about it, are annoying!

Also, the first point is factually wrong. There's a version of Hey Jude in The Royal Tenenbaums, at least the Na,Na,Na part. It might just be an instrumental, but it's still a Beatles song. Also, the notion that The Velvet Underground's catalog is perfect is as ludicrous as the notion that The Beatles catalog is perfect. No artist/band has a perfect catalog.

The Sex Pistols have a perfect catalog. Granted, it isn't really a catalog, it's a flyer...but they have a perfect flyer.

No one considers the beatles discography perfect, even the hardcore fans. but, it's true that the VU albums received all by the critics a perfect rating.

Perfection is boring. The Beatles are something better than perfect.
