Drawn from the tail-end of Cold War apocalyptic-hysteria, this film interprets five decades of musical history in a sword-swinging samurai sauté.

It's beautifully campy and over-the-top. You won't die happy until you've seen this film.

It'll hopefully be making bigger rounds when it inevitably wins the Best Foreign Film Oscar, but A Separation is the best movie I've seen in the last five years. Superbly acted, filmed, and unfathomably incredibly adverbly written. Everyone must see it.

Also:

No Man's Land (2001) - A delightful romp through the Bosnian War.
The Happiness of the Katakuris (2001) - From oddball director Takashi Miike is his most oddball film. A hybrid of comedy, horror, musical, family melodrama, and claymation that strangely works with extremely entertaining dividends (keyword: strangely).

Any Miike for the most part should be on this list. Katakuris is great. His best film is Gozu though. It is basically Miike being David Lynch. Which is about the best thing ever.

Want to see Andy Griffith in a totally different role than his TV one? Check this one out:

It's a great movie about what it means to be a celebrity and the toll it takes on a person.
