Interesting analysis. There doesn't seem to be many U2 fans on these forums unfortunately. I'm not one either but considering how strong their following is both on these charts and in general they are certainly under-represented around here. They have instead become something of a figurehead for the bands you have to hate because Bono is Oh such a douche.

I voted for the Stones and, although I can see where the comment is coming from when compared to The Beatles and Radiohead, I believe they have released several magnificent albums. Exile is their finest effort, but Let It Bleed, Beggars Banquet, Sticky Fingers and Aftermath are worthy as albums rather than just a collection of songs.

Thank you for actually thinking about this poll and discussing it in your comment. I kinda wish people would explain why the Stones, besides the fact that they are on the U2 hating band-wagon, or that the Stones are just "classic" so of course them.

Here is my breakdown of their Top 10 Albums:
************************************The Rolling Stones**************************************
Exile on Main St.: 80
Great Consistency, but no magic in my opinion. It doesn't have a single amazing song on it-
but a collection of medium to high quality songs.
Key track: Tumbling Dice

Let It Bleed: 75
Everything is great except for these tracks that kill it for me to be a great album:
Love in Vain
Live with Me
Country Honk- there is a better version
Key Tracks: Gimme Shelter, Midnight Rambler, You Can't Always Get What you Want.

Sticky fingers: 90
Everything is great except for these tracks that kill it for me to be a great album:
I Got the Blues - mood depending I guess.
Dead Floweres- but I can see how this could be appealing to others.
Key Tracks: Brown Sugar, Wild Horses, Bitch

Beggars Banquet: 70
Everything is great except for these tracks that kill it for me to be a great album:
Dear Doctor
Jigsaw Puzzle
Prodigal Son - great blues, but still weak.
Salt of the Earth- meh
Key Tracks: Sympathy for the Devil, Street Fighting Man

Aftermath: 70
Everything is great except for these tracks that kill it for me to be a great album:
Stupid Girl
Going Home
Flight 505
High and Dry
Out of Time
Key Tracks: Mother's Little Helper, Under My Thumb, Paint it Black (US only)

Some Girls: 65
Bland all around, bu the Key Tracks: Beast of Burden, Shattered, Miss You
Far Away Eyes- just sucks

Between the Buttons: 75
Everything is great except for these tracks that kill it for me to be a great album:
All Sold Out- depending
Complicated
Something Happened to me Yesterday
Key Tracks: Let's Spend the Night Together, Ruby Tuesday

Their Satanic Majesties Request: 85
One of their least favorite, is actually
a good album. Maybe a bit strange, but at
least is consistant and doesn't have a crap
song.

Out Of Our Heads: 90
Pretty good, but half of it is written by
others (yes I do understand that was the
custom at the time). Might be one of their best.
Key Tracks: That's How Strong My Love Is, Good Times, Satisfaction, Play With Fire

Tattoo You: 65
Ok- Start Me Up is of course their last good
song, IMO. And... unfortunately the only
really good song on this album.

*****************************************U2*****************************************

Joshua Tree: 100
Not a bad song on there, and quite a few
amazing ones-
Where the Streets Have No Name
With or Without You
Bullet the Blue Sky
Running to Stand Still
In God's Country
Exit

Achtung Baby: 100 (wow this was written after Joshua Tree - Stones weren't capable of such growth
Not a bad song on there, and quite a few
amazing ones-
One
Until the end of the world
Acrobat
Love Is Blindness
The Fly
Mysterious Ways

War: 90
Low Quality Songs:
Too 80s - Red Light and Surrender

The Unforgettable Fire:85
Low Quality Songs
The Unforgettable Fire- (too 80s)
Elvis Presley & America

All That You Can't Leave Behind:90
Bono being dumb: Peace On Earth

How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb: 75 (I would replace this with Pop, highly underrated)
Tracks that ruined this album:
A Man and A Woman
Crumbs From Your Table
Original of the Species
Yahweh

Boy: 100
Not a weak track - notable tracks:
I will follow
An Cat Dubh/Into the Heart
Out of Control
The Ocean
Electric Co.
Shadows and Tall Trees

No Line On The Horizon: 90
What ruined it for me:
Magnificent- don't know why, but this is my least favorite U2 song ever.
Order of songs could be improved, or maybe it
is just missing glue- feels off somehow.

Rattle and Hum: 75 - watch the DVD
Music is not it's best. The should have done
an E.P. with the following notable Tracks:
Desire
Helter Skelter
Silver and Gold
Angel of Harlem
Love Rescue Me (Bob Dylan co-wrote)
God Part II
All I want is You
I personally don't like When love comes to town
but it is with BB King.

Zooropa: 100- Not a bad track
Notable:
Zooropa
Numb
Stay (Faraway, So Close!)
The First Time
"Daddy's Gonna Pay for Your Crashed Car"

Pop: 95 (If replacing HTDAAB)
Not a bad song (IMO)
Notable:
Staring At the Sun
If God Will Send His Angels
Gone
Please
If You Wear That Velvet Dress
Wake Up Dead Man

Album Average:
Top 10 minus best of and live - The Rolling Stones: 76.5
Top 10 - U2: 90.5

For the Rolling Stones I guess the factor that makes me not think their albums are up to par is that they always have a really bad twangy, or bluesy song that is just terrible (but at least true to heart, I will give them that) - or it is just bland simple rock and roll.

If you rate a band based on music quality (album ratings to follow), appeal, influence, they got chops, musical range (understanding of theory, technology), etc. then I would have to go with U2, in spite of the big name of the Stones, and the amazing work they have done. U2 just out-does them in my opinion when it comes to the things listed above. Collectively, I think U2 is a much better band.

Also, I think it is important to note that on this site, the Stones have a best of in their top ten, and U2 doesn't. It kinda goes to show me, that maybe they are a better band with songs, and U2 is a better band with Albums.

Discussion please!!!!!!!

I love both bands. And, as I already stated on this thread,

"Stones of course. Although if U2 were put up against most any band that has formed since they did I would probably go with U2".

IMO Achtung Baby is about as great an album as Sticky Fingers and Let It Bleed.

IMO one must consider that U2 has only made 12 albums.

And it would be difficult for me 2 think that after U2 have made 29 albums, as have the Stones, that they will put out an album as great as the Stones album A Bigger Bang.

It seems we rate these two artists albums very differently. Here's mine:

ROLLING STONES

#31 Exile on Main Street - 95 - A double album completely void of anything even close to average. The rock & roll masterpiece Rip This Joint and the beautiful Shine a Light lead the way for a stunning collection of songs only rivalled in numbers by Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

#40 Let It Bleed - 95 - The first true Stones masterpiece (although they were good well before it). It would have fared better without Monkey Man which misses the mark but the title track and Gimme Shelter are among the best rock songs ever written and the rest is great bluesy rock.

#86 Beggars Banquet - 90 - Sympathy is worth the price of admission on its own and although the rest of side A does not reach any remarkable heights they come back with a killer side B where Prodigal Son and Salt of the Earth stick out. Dear Doctor brings comical value to the mix.

#144 Sticky Fingers - 85 - While Brown Sugar may be the only instant go to track the album flows great from start to (almost) finish with one great song after another. Sway just feels good, Wild Horses is a slow little number that keeps growing, Can't You Hear Me Knocking is Stones back to basic. Granted, Moonlight Mile is a bad closer.

#226 Aftermath - 80 - Carried mainly by the absolutely brilliant Paint It Black there is indeed a bit of filler on this one. Stupid Girl, Under My Thumb, Flight 505, and High and Dry are all fun listens though.

U2

#473 The Joshua Tree - 70 - The best effort of this band is a good, bordering on very good, one. It starts out great with the three magnificent hit singles but sadly it is all downhill from there. While not including any bad songs the general sound of it isn't appealing enough for 50 minutes. Of the closing eight songs In God's Country, Trip Through Your Wires, and One Tree Hill come close to great but ultimately fails to deliver.

Note: Other rated albums by The Stones include pretty much everything but a handful of the recent ones. Other rated albums by U2 include Boy, War, Achtung Baby, and Zooropa. I do recall liking Rattle and Hum though. Ranking refers to position on my overall list.

I rarely explain my choices of anything. I just like it because it is good, not because of anything else.

That said, I really do think U2 was a good band. I think some of their work is better than most RS albums. Particularly Boy and Achtung Baby are brilliant albums.
