Lyrics of "Welcome to Paradise":
Dear mother,
Can you hear me laughing?
It's been six whole months
Since that I have left your home
It makes me wonder why I'm still here
For some strange reason it's now
Feeling like my home
And I'm never gonna go
That doesn't sound 11-15 to me. Maybe you feel the intelligence level is directed towards 11 through 15 year old listeners, but the subject of the songs seem to me that it's talking about someone in their later teen years.

It's simple. It's unapologetic. It's wonderful.
Not every album has to include lyrics that are worthy of being leatherbound. An album doesn't have to include complex time signatures to be worthy of a person's ear.
It was pop-punk perfection that kicked in the door of a year of albums that included Michael Bolton, Toni Braxton, R. Kelly, Mariah Carey, and Celine Dion. >Cough!< "Welcome to Paradise" and its album-mates were a very welcome sound among All-4-One, Jon Secada, Xscape, and Tevin Campbell. Good lord. What rubbish.
I love this album with every fiber of my being...and you know how fiber enhances any dookie! I played this thing in my car for several weeks straight.
Thank you, Green Day. You gave my life one hell of a soundtrack during my early twenties! _________________ Speakers of the House DJ

This album was and is definitely aimed towards high school/college aged kids. What's really wrong with that? I was a bit too young when it came out, but I discovered it in my late high school years and it was like discovering plutonium or something...it was just magical. And to be honest, at 24, it still sounds almost just as good as it did back then. As lame as it sounds, this album will forever hold a fond place in my heart. I can still listen to it start to finish and love every moment. Longview is one of my favorite songs of all time. It's just so easy to relate to. That's probably a big reason why the album exploded like it did...it resonated with a lot of people.

Anyone who doesn't like this album is just silly. Basket Case is so catchy it almost hurts.

I'll admit I file Green Day under the guilty pleasure category. But I listened to Dookie and Kerplunk before it a lot in the early to mid 90's and a couple years ago, after a years of it mostly sitting on the shelf, I went back to it. And you know what? It still sounds fresh. It's contemporary, it's lively, it's catchy as hell, it's irreverent, and it's steeped in the pathos of late adolescence/ early adulthood. It's like a musical equivalent of The Catcher in The Rye. In a way, I'd almost argue that at this time, Green Day was cooler than Nirvana. I say that because while Kurt Cobain was exploring the painfully cool, dark- serious woe is me, the world is a painful place, and I'm angry and bitter about it, Billy Joe and company always had a slightly irreverent sense of humor mixed in with their Gen-X angst. That's another interesting thing about Green Day. They are very much a generation X band who for some reason became more popular with the next generation. I'd argue that Dookie, along with Nevermind, was very much a soundtrack for generation X. My generation was the latchkey generation. That's who this album was made for, and it's stood the test of time.
Oh, and I like American Idiot too, which of course has a very different tone and message to it.

I like this version of Green Day better; when they were young, full of bluster, and not trying to reach for the profound or pretentious. Some may turn their nose up at the immaturity of this album, but not all music needs to reflect older ages. Green Day's best. WAY better than American Idiot.

Seriously??? Over Basket Case, When I Come Around, or Welcome To Paradise? Please. Longview was just the first single, the others by far exceeded it. _________________ <(: @ >
