Magnificent album, and only one of a few that you think is not overrated when it's near the top of anyone's list.

I've always leaned towards "I'm Waiting For The Day" as my favorite track on the album.

Yes! I love the drum intro, it's in my mind all the time.

This is the worst trip I've ever been on.

I like this album. Obviously I'm in love with the vocal harmonies throughout, Beach Boys always did well with that, but Sloop John B. and Wouldn't it be nice are some of the best songs ever. Just so catchy.

A good album, but it doesn't really work for me. Rather, I'm a big fan of certain songs, like "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "Sloop John B" and especially the magnificent "God Only Knows", which can rival any song ever written by anyone else. As an album, however, it becomes too samey and kind of plodding.

Oh boy, here we go... It's a very good album, no doubt about it. The vocal harmonies of this group are always beautiful, even more so here, and I Know There's An Answer is a masterpiece of a pop song, probably their best ever and definitely the best this album has to offer. I also love the instrumental title track, Sloop John B (great lyrics) and the pessimistic Caroline No. Actually I don't have any serious issues with any of the other songs (except the boring Let's Go Away For Awhile) but they don't fascinate me, I just like them. Everybody talks about how the fact that the production sounds dated adds up charm to this album, but honestly it doesn't work with me. The lyrics, while definitely mature for a formerly surfer band, sometimes are a little too sentimental for my taste. And I have tried again and again and again, therefore I still can't find what's so special about God Only Knows. There I said it. Good lyrics, OK. I have also heard that many people, mostly musicians, appreciate it for its compositional complexity, and acknowledging my lack of music-related education, maybe that's what I'm missing? Anyway, I enjoy it, I really do, it's very solid and likable, but the '60s imho had much better stuff to offer, 1966 included. Now I'll wonder again why I Know There's An Answer is so underappreciated...

"I Know There's an Answer" is nice, but I think "Hang on to Your Ego" (the original version) is slightly better. The real highlight on the album for me is "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times". It's a great song and the lyrics just speak to me so much.

Obviously "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "God Only Knows", and "Sloop John B" are all awesome too, but I've always thought "God Only Knows" was a little overrated. On the BEA songs chart (which I realize is a little flawed and pretty much only involves songs that are on all-around great albums), "God Only Knows" is 11, and I've seen it in the number 1-5 spot on a few critics' lists. I just don't get it. It's a great song, but nowhere near "Like a Rolling Stone" or "Good Vibrations" or "A Day in the Life".

Anyway, Pet Sounds is definitely one of my favorite albums, and although lots of critics put it as #1, I don't even think it's overrated (something I do think about lots of other albums which I love even more than Pet Sounds).

Can we please agree that Wouldn't It Be Nice is a better song than God Only Knows?

Never! I love both, but "God Only Knows" did something to me even the first time I heard those words being sung, which is rare, and since then it's just gotten better. Smile

This is objectively the greatest album of all time...

...just kidding, but it is my personal favorite. The melodies are more beautiful than any others that I've ever heard. The harmonies that compliment these melodies are luscious in a way that only the Beach Boys could do. The instrumental arrangements are complex and well-orchestrated. The lyrics, though often simple, speak very well to the universal themes of youth and love. Some songs delve into deeper and more developed emotions (notably "I Know There's An Answer" and "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times"). The album definitely has some sort of arc, although not perfectly describable. It really does take you to another place.

I think, ultimately, what makes this album my favorite is that there has never been a single time I've listened to it (which is literally hundreds) that I haven't absolutely enjoyed it. That's all there really is to it.

If you haven't listened to this before, I implore you to do so.
