My personal favorite:
The Life Pursuit, by Belle and Sebastian.

Others that haven't been mentioned and I think you should give a shot

Conductor - The Comas
(A virtually unknown band, but with a special touch. Give them a listen)
From a Basement on the Hill - Elliot Smith
(More edgy than his earlier work (and that is saying something), a soft and powerful work)
Up - Peter Gabriel
(What can I say? Listen yourself)
Speakerboxx/The Love Below - OutKast
(If you have the smallest bit of interest in hip-hop, this album redefines the genre to me, gives hope to those who like complexity and innovation in music that hip-hop may prove a genre that we can enjoy)
Demon Days - Gorillaz
Welcome to the Monkey House - The Dandy Warhols

Also, I want to say that Origin of Symmetry is Muse's best album (and it happened to also come out in the 21st century)

Empire I agreed about Origin of Symmetry, and in for me, it can be 21st century's Muse's number 1 so far.

I don't think that the quality of this decade compared with the others has diminished. The production, the melody, harmony and rythm are as strong as in the 60's and 70's, and you can find some really good albums out there.

The main problem this decade have is the lack of originality. How many artists at this moment can say they have an own style? I think there are countless. The first Strokes record for example, can compete with the top punk albums of the 20th century, but their deficiency on having an own style make them a just good clone band of Television and The Stooges, and it doesn't matter how much I love their debut, they are still ripping off something from others.

The more rescueable of this decade is the music coming from Canada, some of them are very good, although they have not found the black thread, you can find a lot of them to be very propositive.

What can we expect from now on?
Music artists repeating old music artists? Or are we only stuck in a hole trying to get out at any moment?

Hey BC,

I've noticed this before. I think we have some similar taste in music and your 21st century list confirms this. You have good taste and your list has intrigued me. Very Happy

First off, I didn't understand what you meant by "black thread" and "propositive." Please explain.

Hmm... I hate to say this but I don't know if there is much room for ingenuity and total originality in rock anymore. Most bands/artists derive their music from something (probably better) that has gone before. Sometimes genres get mixed and for a brief time a new genre or sound emerges, but it won't be original for long. How derivative or original an artist is depends on the variety, and dare I say, "quality" of influences they have consumed. But being deriviative is not necessarily bad. I always thought the Strokes were derivative, but I love their first record because in my opinion, they are derivative of all the right influences.

I agree with you that there have been good albums made in the 2000's and a few great ones even, but my belief is that very few will be worthy of the "Best ever" category as time goes on. I also think it's too early to tell whether albums made in this decade will stand the test of time. Something completely under the radar might be the next Velvet Underground and Nico Who knows? On the other hand, critically accalimed albums may be forgotten or not as revered 10 years from now. My point: I don't think your list should be as long as it is.

That said, I do want to comment on some of your inclusions: I like the fact that you have Chutes too Narrow, Illinois, Is This It, Funeral, and Clap your Hands Say Yeah. They're all current favorites of mine and except for the last one might stand a chance of being revered as great in the future. Clap your Hands is a very good debut, but time will tell with this new band. Clap your Hands is a great example of a band that is derivative of its influences but in a good way. I like the mention of Elliot Smith, Super Furry Animals, and Calexico--all great artists/bands but those are merely good albums, not worthy of best ever status. The White Stripes-A very good, also very derivative band, that I think will eventually not be revered as highly in the future. The White Stipes along with the Strokes main claim to fame is bringing true oldschool rock n roll back to the mainstream and showing numetal and boybands the door, well sort of anyway. But the White Stripes are hardly original. Radiohead is a self-consciously arty band that has continued to push the envelope of what can be done in rock. They may be one of the few original bands there is. Kid A? Personally, I don't see what the big deal is about this album. But I'm not really a fan of electronic sounds in rock; I prefer organic ones. I like Hail to the Thief better and it is a very good album. Best ever? I don't know about that. Yoshimi?, good but not as good as its predecessor, The Soft Bulletin but that was a different decade.

There is one serious omission in your list: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot by Wilco. With this album, Wilco became America's answer to Radiohead. And the artistic quality of this album and the story that surrounded it, well this one will most likely go down as best ever in my opinion. Boys and Girls in America by the Hold Steady is very good too. Oh and what about hip hop? Outkast's albums tend to be very good. Both Stankonia and The Love Below are very good. The Roots are another very good hip hop group. Phrenology is a damn good album.

Finally, looking at your list, I recommend two bands to you:
The Decemberists--A band that is just starting to get noticed, and whose new album is phenomenal, and The New Pornographers-a deliriously good pop/rock band from Vancouver B.C. in the tradition of the Beatles, The Kinks, The Who, and The Zombies. Both Mass Romantic and Twin Cinema are powerpop masterpieces in my opinion. Check them out.
