Yeah, sorry, but that really was crap.

Sure, it happens occasionally, but there are way too many mega-selling albums that suck badly. No Strings Attached, anyone?

I think that all of the the big winners are signed to one of the four major labels (Sony, Universal, Warner and EMI) or their affiliates!

There's a huge surprise. Rolling Eyes

Quote:
I mean, its always been an industry award show- focusing on quantity moreso than quality. This year more than any, the awards were basically a "thank you" to the highest selling acts for keeping the sinking ship afloat for juuuuust a little bit longer.

Nicely put. Laughing

Nominations are determined by a vote and it can be difficult for recordings from small record companies to make it through the nominating process especially if they are not popular. Here is the GRAMMY Awards voting process:

Submission
Recording Academy members and record companies enter recordings and music videos released during the eligibility year (October 1, 2008 to August 31, 2009) which they consider worthy of recognition in the GRAMMY Awards process. Recordings must be in general distribution in the United States, i.e. sales by label to a branch or recognized independent distributor, via the Internet, or mail order/retail sales for a nationally marketed product. Record companies are allowed to submit entries without being members of the Recording Academy, but they must be registered with the Academy’s Awards Department.

Screening
Reviewing sessions by more than 150 experts in various fields are held to ensure that entered recordings meet specific qualifications and have been placed in appropriate fields such as Rock, R&B, Jazz, Country, Gospel, New Age, Rap, Classical and Latin, among others. The purpose of screenings is not to make artistic or technical judgments about the recordings, but rather to make sure that each entry is eligible and placed in its proper category.

Nominating
First-round ballots are sent to voting members in good dues standing. To help ensure the quality of the voting, members are directed to vote only in their fields of expertise; they may nominate in the four general categories (Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best New Artist) and in no more than nine out of the 29 fields. Ballots are tabulated by the independent accounting firm of Deloitte.

Recording Academy voting members are professionals with creative or technical credits on six commercially released tracks (or their equivalent). These may include vocalists, conductors, songwriters, composers, engineers, producers, instrumentalists, arrangers, art directors, album notes writers, narrators, and music video artists and technicians. Record companies do not vote.

The 5 recordings that earn the most votes become the nominees. There may be more than five nominees if there is a tie in the nomination process.

Special Nominating Committees
In craft and other specialized categories, final nominations are determined by national nomination review committees comprised of voting members from all of The Academy's Chapter cities.

Final Voting
Final-round ballots are sent to voting members in good dues standing. The finalists determined by the special nominating committees are also included in this ballot. In this final round, Recording Academy members may vote in the four general categories and in no more than eight of the 29 fields. Record companies do not vote. Ballots again are tabulated by the independent accounting firm of Deloitte.

Results
Results of members' voting are not known until the GRAMMY Awards presentation ceremony when names of the winners are delivered by Deloitte in sealed envelopes. GRAMMY Award winners are revealed during the GRAMMY Awards telecast.

When I heard that neither Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective nor Wilco were up for album of the year let alone Alternative album of the year, I didn't even bother to turn on my TV.

The best Grammy I ever watched was last year with the electrifying performance from the USC drum line and Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood.

Frankly of those bands named, only Muse had the right combination of critical acclaim and commercial success that they should have been a hands down shoo-in for best album or best alternative or rock artist.

But...

as was noted, the Grammy's are about who bribed the judges the best. If you didn't take part, you didn't take part.

It sounds as though you were surprised. The Grammy's are not about commending good or interesting music, it has always been about SALES. And call me a snob if you want, but the general public has very undescerning (which is to say, bad) taste. Part of the problem is radio and part of the problem is the major labels as well. But most people I know who are serious music fans don't give two shits about the Grammy's. Everyone here is in that category. Maybe we should take a poll... Do you [whoever's reading this] care about the Grammy's?

I want the Grammys to celebrate the best music recordings of the year, the Oscars to celebrate the best movies of the year, the Emmys to celebrate the best TV and the Tonys to celebrate the best stage theatre. I think that the Tonys do a pretty good job. I want a lot of other things that I won't get. To that extent I care about the Grammys. However, if they don't celebrate the best in music my world won't stop turning.

Ok ,it would appear there isn't a direct connection between sales and the "Album of the Year." RF, since you seem to have statistics at the ready, Can you produce the list of winners with their sales? I bet none of them were lightweights, salewise. My point was usually the nominees themselves all spent some time on the Billboard Top 100 the year of nomination. Anyway, you'll never convince me that the general public buys and listen to the "best" music, and the Grammy's generally don't honor it. There are a few exceptions on that list above though.
