If that were the case, then we'd still see older country artists ranking highly on these charts, and really the only one who does is Johnny Cash.

I don't know if that's true. Blues is still incredibly respected as a genre, yet really only the blues-rock of white guys really gets recognition on this site's charts. John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, Albert King, etc don't have an album in our top 1000.

I feel like both genres are probably respected, but not necessarily listened to all that often by a lot of people.
