My thoughts exactly.

Regardless of the wording, I don't think it's a thread that will promote good discussion; it's much like "worst albums I ever heard" charts/lists.

Oh well, this seemed like a good idea in my head.

I'm fine with the top 1000 as it is. Although the BEA ranks interest me, I don't have any feelings about how they should or shouldn't be. The world would be really boring if everybody had the same tastes as me.

It would be different if I saw them as a reflection of something more objective, like influence or popularity, but taste is an elusive thing. I could name albums I don't like, but it wouldn't give me any satisfaction for albummaster to remove them from the list or for people to stop liking them.

There are certain albums I really don't understand the love for. From the BEA top 1000, this is probably the biggest puzzler for me:

Time by Electric Light Orchestra

BEA #782

I was a VERY big fan of ELO. They were my first concert. Out Of The Blue was the first album I ever bought. But when Discovery came out, I was highly disappointed. It sounded like Jeff Lynne had stopped trying to further the orchestra as rock band approach, and that he had gotten lazy with his writing while getting almost too slick with his production. I really hoped that Time would be a return to form, but it was, like the next two albums (Secret Messages and Balance Of Power), progressively weaker. Lynne had no interest in further exploring the orchestra, and had, in fact, pared ELO down to a 4 piece band with the drummer and bass player providing less music and keyboardist Richard Tandy becoming the main member of what was basically a duo. "Hold On Tight" was a good but really outdated sounding song, and the only other piece that I found to be really worthwhile on Time was "Rain Is Falling". Otherwise, it's a slick sounding, drab concept album with a weak and uninteresting story written produced and played by a man who sounds like he just wants out of his contract.

Not saying I'm the right one. I'm saying I don't get it.

As for ELO's albums, the ranking of their discography on BEA stumps me more than any other band. I just don't get how Time and Discovery can rate so high. Even Balance Of Power and Secret Messages, which are really not very good albums, are above better albums by ELO.

My ranking of their studio albums, with the BEA rank in parentheses. The site and myself don't agree on a single placement, which I find interesting. I don't think there's another band like this for me on BEA:

A New World Record (Out Of The Blue)
Eldorado (Time)
Face The Music (A New World Record)
Out Of The Blue (Discovery)
On The Third Day (Eldorado)
No Answer (The debut) (Face The Music)
ELO II (Secret Messages)
Discovery (On The Third Day)
Time (Balance Of Power)
Secret Messages (No Answer)
Balance Of Power (ELO II)

(I'm not posting this because I want people to change their minds and like what I like. I'm posting this because I can wish all I want to about the top 1000. That doesn't mean I want AM to go in and eliminate anything or change anything. I think the question posed by the op is a valid question, and we shouldn't be afraid to answer it.)

How could the top 1000 be different without people changing their minds or someone manually altering it? I'm not sure what it is you're wishing for exactly.

From here on out this thread is just "Albums That You Don't Get Why They're In The Top 100"
Less arguing that way, and I think that is essentially what the aim of the thread was. Doesn't flow very well though. Laughing And I don't think it is grammatically correct either, but deal with it.

It's thought versus action, quite straightforward, right? He might wish the top 1000 was different, but he wouldn't want to actually enforce it.
