I voted for While my guitar gently weeps
still I'm surprised Julia only received 4%!
A really intimate and fragile moment for John...

What an album this is, I think I've probably underrated it until now.

Great song, but the birth of heavy metal was the song "Born to Be Wild" by Steppenwolf. You can even call "You Really Got Me" by The Kinks the birth of heavy metal.
But, anyways, 1968 was an important year for metal, as Led Zeppelin's debut album was released, and some great songs were released ("Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" by Jimi Hendrix, "Helter Skelter" by The Beatles, ""I Heard Her Call My Name" by The Velvet Underground, AND the first metal song "Born to be Wild" by Steppenwolf).

I don't really think you can call one song "the birth of heavy metal".
One influential band was Vanilla Fudge, whose self-titled album was released the same year as Steppenwolf.
Both Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin have stated them as a major influence (so has Yes btw, because they were not only proto-metal, they were also proto-PROG).
