I'd love to see some of your "animation" lists guys (even via pm if you prefer).

work in progress: http://letterboxd.com/meccalecca/list/best-animated/

And if rotoscoping counts, Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly will also be included.

I've never seen it, but from what I know about it I'm going to have to say no. The ape is the only stop-motion element, right? Think That's kinda like saying Life of Pi is an animated film because the Tiger was CGI.

We'll have to figure out what should count and what won't Sad I knew it'd be a difficult task.

General opinion on King Kong?

Yeah it's a tough call. It's been a long time since I've seen it, but it's generally the ape that's animated in stop motion. A far more impressive feat than any CGI, but nonetheless it is sort of the primitive version of CGI. I'm totally fine with it not counting.

Was also wondering about something like Team America. I imagine that puppets count.

Animation is actually a rather varied medium.

Again, I haven't seen it Sad I watched the trailer on Youtube, and I'm not sure... IMDB does label it as animation, but at what line do we cross that puppets don't count? I can't see us considering a Muppet movie an animated film.

I'm going to have to get a general consensus on that again.

Even though I've watched it, I'm kinda confused about what medium David Lynch's Rabbits is. Was that stop-motion animation, or actors wit rabbit masks?

Very true about the Muppets. I guess the difference between the two is the sets. the Muppets are filmed in the "real world" while Team America required sets to be constructed.

it's a tough call

I've seen it listed as animation, but it's definitely people with masks, so I'm not sure why it gets listed as animation

Aight, I'm going to say no to both Team America and Rabbits. Perhaps anything with live-action puppets will be cut...

This will all have to be settled when the thread is up Neutral I was worried this would happen. I might have to implement a 2 votes minimum rule. Not that anything with only 1 vote has ever made the final lists, but it would imply that people accept it as an animated film.

We should probably come to some sort of consensus on what's the best Chuck Jones' short film as well (swear to god if someone picks Speedy Gonzales fuck you that's not even a Jones short).

I vote for either Duck Amuck, One Froggy Evening or Rabbit of Seville.

Yeah, I noticed King Kong in my research too, but yeah that's gotta be chalked up as a special effect, similar to Jurassic Park. It made a few lists primarily because of its influence and innovation on the genre. I watched Cat City last night. I've got a rough 100, but I really am interested in trying to see the films of Satoshi Kon as he seems to be very well regarded.
