So I'm kind of coming to a close to my project... 6 months into it. 1330 albums listened to between 1950 and 2009. I'm not even close with 2010s yet (43 albums in and because I'm so unfamiliar with it... at least so I think, that I probably want to do a total of 300 albums).

Anyway... a small reason I'm doing this is to update my overall chart. I was dissatisfied that I kind of just threw it together. It was more or less a gut check and very much so less scientific. I think getting older and the job I'm in... well I'm way more meticulous (kinda) and really care... do I like this album more than that one and why. So I developed this system and tested it out with the 1950s... by the end I was satisfied. I realized the shortcomings of my system and that it totally wasn't any more scientific than any soft science of surveys. If I took the same survey 10 times... I might just answer it differently each time, even if I took it all at once.

So... here's a rough draft of two different versions of what my overall could look like, minus the 2010s of course (which I think there's probably at least 10 albums that would make it).

This one is based on the fact that sometimes I do think an overall chart should have 50 Beatles albums because one part about the respect of musicians/albums that I have is their staying power and often groups like the Beatles have multiple staying power albums. They are icons of our culture for a reason... it's not just because some old fat fart wanted to make money, although that of course always plays a role. So there's a part of me that is happy with having 2198498425 U2 albums on my list... U2 made A LOT of solid albums. So here's that list:

Top 100 Test: Rating Only by sethmadsen

But then there's a part of me that actually agrees that the overall chart should be the best of each artist I find fantastic. Sometimes great albums get a shaft because what... you want to rank all 19357594 Beatles albums? That's kind of not fair. I do sometimes find myself thinking though... huh... so I axed 50 to 80 albums on this list which I rated higher, just so I could have some esoteric one off band who made a great record once to be on my list... like AFI and Sublime. I mean no offence, I like those bands, but they aren't what I'd consider the greatest ever.

Anyway, here's that list: Top 100 Test: 1 per artist by sethmadsen

I'll probably mill over it and of course when I add 2010 data to it, who knows what I'll settle on.

I think I prefer the second because it's more varied Seth. You certainly like rap/hip hop more than I do but I have a question on your choice of albums of two artists in your list:
- Smashing Pumpkins: I always wonder why people like Mellon Collie better than Siamese Dream which I consider a masterpiece
- B-52's: why Cosmic Thing over the B-52's album which contains these fantastic weird but brilliant tracks like Rock Lobster and Dance This Mess Around?

Anyway: good work Seth

Thanks for the feedback!

Let's see... Mellon Collie vs Siamese Dream:

Siamese Dream: I have at a solid 95 rating and it actually is currently ranked number 9 on my current overall chart. So my gut check agrees with you.

Mellon Collie: I have a 90 without adjusting the score and a 99.2 with the top 13 songs (thanks to your ideas with double albums).

If I'm looking for a blockbuster blow my mind concise album, Siamese all the way. If I'm looking for something that has more depth to it, more "artistry" to it, Mellon Collie all the way.

So to answer your question, both albums are fantastic, but my choice was really based on the 99.2 score.

As for the B-52's, I think it more or less comes down to nostalgia but also I'm not a huge fan of the quirky/silly stuff. I "appreciate" quirky stuff, but I don't consider it "great" if that makes any sense. I feel that although Cosmic Thing is a bit safe and could be boring to some, feel it has some of their best beats, melodies, and songwriting. This goes for Phish too... their quirky stuff isn't my favorite. I'd take Farmhouse over Rift or Billy Breathes for this very same reason. It's not bad, it's just " oberflächlich" to me.

Hi Seth I'm answering this while listening to the new Peppers album (starting at the second half because I think I will like this part most when I read the reviews: upto now very good) in between my 1988 listening project which can get a bit in the way of just listening to albums I really like and discovering new albums of 2016.

On Smashing Pumpkins: ok I see that there is not a big difference for you: maybe you shouldn't have listened to me and stuck to your old scoring system, than Siamese Dream would have been on the top Brick wall Wink . But to me I don't really have a big connection with Mellon Collie while Siamese Dream is a masterpiece but all if this is of course personal taste.

On the silliness of the first B-52's album: of course it's silly but to me it's also great musically in my opinion also because of the very good interaction between the voices of the female singers and Fred Schneider. In general I don't like silliness on albums especially if they are mocking their own music (something that I don't really like about artists like Zappa or Ween) but on this album (and the next) it works really well as far as I'm concerned.

On Phish: I don't really know Farmhouse and since it's only the 93rd album of 2000 I won't even have it in my listening sessions per year but I do know a few tracks of that album from live albums and of course tracks like Gotta Jibboo and Farmhouse are also great.
I discovered this band when I read a very enthusiastic review of Billy Breathes after it came out in 1996 and I connected with it immediately because to me there are some really great tracks on it like Waste and Taste which are truly gems to me and certainly not superficial (although you would think otherwise if you only look at the goofy album cover). The thing is this album is not so much about electric guitars and it was only later that I discovered their many live albums on which they are jamming till they drop and where I really like the guitar playing so I even appreciate them more now. Phish and Built to Spill (to me you can't find more sprawling guitar playing than on their "Live" album of 2000 with The Plan, a 20:30 version of Cortez The Killer and especially a 19:08 live version of Broken Chairs) are to me the quintessential guitar jamming bands of course next to the big chief Neil Young.

Yes, Phish is a phenomenal band. Totally not discounting

I even like the song on Rift that basically repeats "when you're there, I sleep lengthwise, and when you're gone, I sleep diagonally in my bed."

But I'll totally choose Farmhouse any day over anything else (minus live stuff... have this live in Japan 4 cd set that is amazing) mostly cause I like the fun part of Phish... I really do, but somehow it ruins the album from be a best ever album for me.

As for B-52's... I like Rock Lobster and all, but eh, it's a matter of taste.

As for Mellon Collie... Laughing Laughing Laughing

Also, what is it you don't like? Too soft at times? Too all over the place. Too harsh at times?

If definition is "perfect" album (whatever that means, but I think you get the picture), I'd totally agree that Siamese is a more perfect album than Mellon Collie.

Also just out of curiosity, what do you think about Gish and Adore?

For me it probably (gut check, my ratings say otherwise):

1. Siamese Dream
1.5 ( Laughing ) Picese Iscariot
2. Mellon Collie
3. Adore
4. Gish
5. Teargarden by Kaleidoscope
6. Machina
7. The rest I kinda think are ok

Thx Seth.
My order for Smashing Pumpkins albums would be:
1. Siamese Dream (of course)
2. Pisces Iscariot
3. Gish
4. Mellon Collie
5. Oceania
6. Machina

So like you I also have a bit of a knack for Pisces Iscariot especially because of Starla and also a bit Hello Kitty Kat.
I discovered Gish before Siamese Dream so I had no comparison point at that moment and I liked it but to me this album is still completely different from the rest of their albums.
Mellon Collie is certainly a good album and I especially like X.Y.U. on it.
I don't really like the latter albums and I think the main thing about SP in general when they're not genial is they tend to trend to bland hard rock or hard rock slows. It's not like I don't like hard but there always has to be some subtlety or musicality in it which I sometimes miss in the latter albums and even sometimes on Mellon Collie.
And this is strange: I first heard Siamese Dream in my car CD player driving through Scotland and I didn't like it because I thought it was too hard and without subtlety. I still don't understand that first feeling but it quickly changed Smile

Hehehe... isn't it funny how our tastes change/opinion of things, etc. I'm sure what I love now, I won't love 10 years from now, and then some I still will equally, and some I'll still appreciate because of the memory of why I liked it then, but don't really like it now (Piebald is a good example of this).

So it sounds like the softer side of Smashing Pumpkins isn't really your forte.

I also think I used to think their quality was much higher than it really is. They are somewhere between great and mediocre. Sometimes when I compare them to other Alternative Rock music, I think they are GREAT, but overall, in the grand scheme of things, there might become a time when they are completely forgotten. Maybe not... just a guess.

I almost gave up on the 2010s so I could finish my other like 8 projects... I'm so close.

But then I realized, patience... I can't really do my other projects until I finish the 2010s... it wouldn't be fair.

So here's my progress so far and the albums I think I will review. It's 244 albums.

I'm sure I'll continue finding new stuff, but for now I think this is sufficient for current purposes. I combed through wikipedia, other people's lists, this site's top 100 and then some friend recommendations:

I must concede that either I'm getting old or I'm getting boring or both, but I am starting to open places in my heart for things I never would have before. More hip-hop and rap (but I at least had a greatest hits appreciation of the genre's), more pop music (Yes Taylor Swift and others)... I also used to be the person that was interested in Alternative/Indie music. It seems Alternative has almost become mainstream (Weezer/Nirvana) and there's starting to be little difference between Indie rock and pop. And then Indie Folk kind of stuff might as well be in that grouping as well because I find it just as uninteresting.

But that's my opinion and taste... I like bombastic, yet dynamic music. Something that is quiet and almost monotone throughout the whole album bores me quickly.

Have had two thoughts recently after listening to a lot of 2010s albums that are high ranked, but to me are sub-par, as well as listening the the montage from heck home recordings of Kurt Cobain.

1) Do we make up our "big artists"... meaning Beatles were only as great as George Martin built them up to be. Sometimes artists get inflated beyond what they really are? Or are they really that great (if Thom Yorke farted in a cup, we'd possibly still worship it, and yet if another artist did the same we'd hate it).

2) I think sometimes the newer works of ANY era go through fads, and some fade and some have "staying" power.
