I'm not saying he didn't touch my life, I spent many happy hours engrossed in the PR album, but I'm not going to pretend everything he did was of that quality.

I don't think anyone is asking you to do that.

This will sound hopelessly irrelevant and off topic but just to make it clear I'm not having a go at Prince or his fans this sort of hush you can only say good things when a person's dead really only started to annoy me at my parent's funerals. Bear with me, I'm not saying I wanted everyone to slag off my parents, but I wanted to remember them as they really were, flaws and all, I just don't think there's anything particularly respectful about a whitewash because it doesn't represent the real person. It almost becomes like you are burying a stranger.

I understand how you could feel that way about your own family but surely you are aware that when people wish to discus what they loved about someone they have lost it is not because they are blind to everything else.

Once again yes Prince did release what like 30-something albums during his career, so no it's not a stretch to call his ENTIRE body of work inconsistent, but why focus on what you didn't like and what didn't affect you on a profound level?

Damn Laughing The inclusion of Phife just makes it harder.

But yeah... still shocked by this. At least we had an explanation for Bowie's death. Prince's still seems surreal.

I'm not going to pretend his music ever really clicked with me, but he seemed like a genuinely weird human being in the best way possible. Always pushing forward, trying new things, shaking things up in great ways. The first superbowl I think I ever watched was his half time show, and while again the music wasn't for me as much it's one of the only halftime shows I can still remember well because it was just notably different. I remember being intrigued more than into the music, just confused in good ways.

I know that might not be the best tribute to him, but between him and Bowie it feels like the world lost a couple people that kept pushing boundaries and it really is a pity.

I loved Purple Rain, I tracked down two earlier albums ('1999' and 'Prince' (the one with a very early version of 'I feel for you' on it)) because I liked that album so much, but nothing ever matched Purple Rain for me, and the follow up, when it did come out, 'Around the World in a day' was pretty dreadful.

Yes okay I know I'm supposed to say nice things because he's dead, but he could be horribly inconsistent if we're being honest.

People are posting here because Prince touched their life in some way and are saddened by the news of his death. It's a shame that you seem bothered by that.

not to mention ATWIAD is a fine album containing one of the greatest pop singles of all time

ATWIAD is god damn incredible. It didn't click with me until the 2nd listen but I fucking love the majority of it and on most days more than Sign O The Times.

I agree with the notion that Prince may not have been the most consistent artist we've ever seen in terms of releases, but the good outweighs the bad like with any legend. Dylan, Stevie, Bowie, Neil Young, etc.. all have numerous albums that have gone down as duds. Who doesn't?

i find it coincidental that a BEA user (lightmyway) mentioned both Prince and David Bowie in the same sentence back in 2012...

being from Minneapolis, and a lover of music, Prince meant quite a bit to me.

After I heard of his death, I felt pretty compelled to write about him.
