All things considered (technical abililty, emotion, unique tone), I'd say the 10 best are:

1. Freddie Mercury
2. Steve Perry
3. Adam Lambert
4. Jeff Buckley
5. Eddie Vedder
6. Daniel Gildenlow
7. Michael Kiske
8. Chris Cornell
9. Jackie Wilson
10. David Coverdale

Wow! Didn't expect to see Coverdale show up on anybody's list. Dude's definitely got a set of pipes, though. I definitely prefer the DP and pre '87 Whitesnake stuff, though.

I'll add Michael Stipe to the list.

He's not an amazing singer, but I can't really think of a singer with more sincere heart.

Paul Simon (his wiki says rock, even if that's a very very loose term here)
John Frusciante - probably not often thought about, but I consider him a fantastic singer, especially when he goes operatic.

Favorite screamers:
Chris Cornell
Dave Grohl
Kurt Cobain
Paul McCartney
John Lennon

I find it interesting Eddie Vedder is equally the worst and equally the best rock singer.

What I mean about worst, is probably the most made fun of, even if I do enjoy it regardless. Just pointing that out - not that I think he's not worthy.

Though I completely agree there's a great tradition of rock vocalists who aren't conventionally great singers, the ones I'd put at the top of a list tend to be:

Rod Stewart
Paul McCartney
Elvis Presley
Prince
Steve Winwood
Van Morrison
Roy Orbison
Roger Daltrey
Captain Beefheart

If I were to include an unconventional singer (well, Beefheart's pretty unconventional), I'd go all the way to the other extreme and pick John Lydon.

Eddie is extremely emotional for me and the tone of his voice is super pleasant, even though his pronnounciation is often questionable.

His songs haven't always been the best, but his voice has always been perfect.

I love that you call them Screamers. I divide singers up into categories too; Belters, Shouters, Growlers and Screamers. Heh heh
