I haven't even thought about it in years. Back in college (mid-90s), I had a reputation for general indifference in the group decision-making process. At one point, my friend, exasperated by my apathy about a dinner decision, said something like "Whatever, Planet Neutral!" He was trying to make a reference to the Neutral Planet in Futurama, but I liked how it rolled off his tongue. When it came time to pick a Hotmail address, I picked planetneutral@hotmail.com and have been using the name in some form or another ever since.

I might get another album or two in, but I'm probably going to be mostly taking a break from album rating tonight, as I plan to spend my night watching the webcast of Phish's New Year's concert from 12/31/95.

Besides being one of the most celebrated Phish shows of all time, as enshrined in the official release linked below, I was at this concert. Can't miss the chance to watch a complete video broadcast of something I experienced first-hand.

Happy New Year to you and yours.

Posted comment: Lots of great bars. Some great musical ideas too, but even the less impactful tracks come and go so quickly that I never get impatient.

Notes: I was in the middle of the next Rolling Stone 500 album sequentially when I saw the news about DOOM. Saw an opportunity to pay respect and continue progress, so here we are. RIP.

Posted comment: I wasn't really feeling this at all until the second half, but it does genuinely finish strong and not enough albums do that.

Notes: Still messing with my template on these posts. Moved the most obscure progress tracking data to the bottom. Regarding this entry, I was raised on the song Fool's Gold, largely because of its inclusion in the first Never Mind the Mainstream compilation. I was surprised to learn it wasn't actually on the original release of this album. I had a harder time getting through this album in a single listen than I expected, due to distractions and maybe some fatigue. I've now heard most of it at least three times. Still feels like a mixed bag.

Notes: Had no idea there was a whole Ray Manzarek connection and might have totally missed it if not for the Soul Kitchen cover.

Posted comment: After the first few tracks, I was surprisingly into this album, especially lyrically. I still kinda like it, but it's ultimately too much slowness for too long for me.

Rating: 60

Posted comment: The Clash are always capable of some great songs, but this album and the individual tracks themselves often felt self-indulgently long and tedious.

Notes: I can't get away from this nagging irritation at the idea that they expected their fans to buy a triple record right after having shelled out for a double album. Even Pink Floyd wasn't THAT full of themselves.

Posted comment: For a while, you really think it's going to be all killer, but then you have to confront his super long country career.

Notes: Too many box sets and compilations on this Rolling Stone list. The Star Club live disc is so good. Listen to that instead.
