I've seen a lot over the years. Was lucky enough to cover (as photographer) anyone who came into NYC for the bulk of the last decade, so it's rather impossible to pick just one.

Sigur Ros (an ethereal presence)
Radiohead (5 times. their songs rise to another level live)
Spiritualized (performing Ladies & Gentlemen)
Rocket From The Crypt (perform with a fiery intensity and showmanship)
Sonic Youth (performing Daydream Nation)
Outkast (Not long after Stankonia came out. They had a killer, wild, funk band backing them)
Beastie Boys (only ever Brooklyn Show)
The Walkmen (everything is played faster and more powerful live)
Flaming Lips (child-like splendor)
Broken Social Scene (saw them in a very very tiny room)
Gogol Bordello (a wild party)
Music Tapes (imaginative performance that goes way beyond music)
The Residents (performance art masters)
Thee Oh Sees (wild garage rock. sweaty and unpredictable)
Afghan Whigs (bringing soul to rock)
The Veils (Finn Andrews sings as though he's possessed)
Wilco (best American band alive)
The Cure (Robert Smith looks like a fat goth girl now, but this band still sounds incredible live)
Arcade Fire (inside a church, on Valentine's Day, performing like it was their last time)
Low (minimal, but loaded with dynamic intensity)
My Bloody Valentine (Sensory overload)
Jeff Mangum (nearly brought me to tears)
Godspeed You Black Emperor (the tension was overwhelming. accompanied by great imagery)

Dirty Projectors are definitely the best band I've seen live, absolutely incredible show. Great energy.

Saw the a few times. once he brought in all the girls into the band, it made a huge difference. Back in the early stages of the band, people vehemently hated Dirty Projectors when they played local shows.

Guns N' Roses now isn't even as good live as most of their tribute bands.

Another good live band: Facetious. GNR is a horrible live band. They used to be good, but no more.
