This song alone makes 1974 a great year for music:

The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, by Genesis, #248.

I mean, the album doesn't suck, but best of the year? Really?

Besides Pink Floyd not releasing anything, what happened in 1974 so that nothing super-awesome got made?

Yes, the Lamb is the best album of 1974, and it is generally underrated (as most of the prog rock albums too).

I think 1970-1973 was the peak for prog rock albums, 1974 was the last good year for the genre (except a few albums, A Trick of the Tail by Genesis from 1976 is a good example, even if it was the first non-Gabriel Genesis album, it is amongst their finest prog rock releases)

Would there be any year that everyone agrees just wasn't all that great? Surely there's been a 'great' album released every year since at least 1960.

Maybe 1974 just saw the least 'great' albums, which would be a surefire way to label it as the worst year in music.

My 1974 Top 5

1. Queen - Sheer Heart Attack
2. Supertramp - Crime Of The Century
3. King Crimson - Red
4. Cluster - Zuckerzeit
5. Tom Waits - The Heart Of Saturday Night

I am not overly versed with 70s music so this is what I have listened to and liked. Need to relisten to my Eno stuff from this year.
