One of the most important features of JD is Ian Curtis' unique voice timbre and how he uses it; I don't want to overstate the significance of that feature but it has enough importance on its own to give people reason to not compare JD to Interpol this much just based on this fact. I mean yeah they're both baritone but Curtis' baritone is much more broad and less nasal than that of Banks'. And also the musical space in Interpol songs are much more filled and sometimes warm (because of the two guitars) compared to cold stark atmosphere of JD songs. Also lyrics are much more straightforward than JD. Also beats are really different where on JD songs it's motoric and straight and a little more watery while on Interpol songs it gets more complex and syncopated most of the times and is also more to the front. Maybe Interpol tries to be like JD, like in naming their songs "obstacle" and stuff but they don't succeed for the most part. Not that the fact that they don't succeed in sounding like JD makes their music bad tho. On this album most songs are decent to good except "Obstacle 1" which is awful. I think they really sound more like Echo & The Bunnymen covering a shoegaze band. Antics is better.
One of the greatest albums ever made. Every song is top notch. Being a massive Chameleons fan, it's nothing I haven't heard before. But damn, they do it well.
