I think I'll kind of agree with Robert Anton Wilson.
It's not that they're the WORST band for album openning tracks
BUT
You WOULD expect someone as awsome as Pearl Jam, a band that has MANY MANY brilliant tracks, to make better choices for their album openers, wouldn't you?

Evil or Very Mad

NO. Once???? Go??? Brain of J??????? Sometimes?? (subdued but a perfect intro) Breakerfall? Can't Keep? Life Wasted? Gonna See My Friend?? The only one of their 9 studio albums that doesn't have a perfect opener is Last Exit off Vitalogy.

Makes me sad how often I have to defend Pearl Jam on this site. Sad

Maybe I'm in the minority but Once, Brain Of J, Gonna See My Friend and Can't Keep are all probably top 20 Pearl Jam songs for me. The others I mentioned I also still love. But I guess like you said when a bands catalogue is made up of countless borderline perfect tracks, it's hard to always live up to the brilliance. Mr. Green

And I know I always mention this album, but Kissing The Lipless off Chutes Too Narrow (The Shins) is another opener that works to perfection.

The Queen Is Dead comes to mind.

Reel Around The Fountain off the Smiths self-titled.

Funny cos I love The Smiths but I'd say there's 5-6 better tracks than Reel Around The Fountain just on that album, and I guess for a track to qualify for this thread it should probably be the best track off an album.

So The Queen Is Dead is an excellent choice, as is Teenage Riot as is Can't Stand Me Now.

I'd also back Release The Pressure from Leftism and Smack My Bitch Up from The Fat Of The Land

[quote="pearljammer13"] when a bands catalogue is made up of countless borderline perfect tracks, it's hard to always live up to the brilliance. [quote]

That is sorta what I mean, I am not saying these tracks are no good, they're all good. What I am talking about is the "WHOA" effect. While nearly all Pearl Jam albums made me go Whoa it literally has NEVER been on the first track.
