This. At the very very least, I think "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "Here Today" are better.

This whole thing seems kinda silly to me if people are just going to give their favorite songs. I doubt you could get anything close to a majority on that. If the "greatest song" argument is going to have any meaning, I think it would have to focus on influence, relevance, familiarity by the general public, timelessness, etc... with personal aesthetic preference having little or no contribution.

Alternatively, we could try to guess the aggregate choice. In other words, if people each made their own list of "greatest songs ever", just like this site does for albums, what would be #1?

In either case, I think Stairway is a reasonable guess. The top-rated song on the site is "A Day in the Life" (stairway is #5). "Like a Rolling Stone" is a popular choice among critics.

I think the songs that would even be allowed to be considered for that are, in no order;

Stairway to Heaven
Smells Like Teen Spirit
Heroes
A Day In The Life
Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band
(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
Gimme Shelter
Purple Haze
Candle In The Wind
Like A Rolling Stone
Blowin In The Wind
The House of the Rising Sun
Johnny B Goode
Stayin Alive
Rapper's Delight
Bohemian Rhapsody
Thriller
Respect
Enter Sandman
Comfortably Numb
Wish You Were Here
Good Vibrations
God Only Knows
All Day And All Of The Night
Should I Stay Or Should I Go
Blitzkrieg Bop
Baba O'Reily
My Generation
Love Will Tear Us Apart

Even then, several of those songs are only on there because they popularized, started, or best represent a style of music.

If anyone wants to add to that list, feel free. I'd love to see this as a poll on the site, frankly, it'd just take forever to make.

Also, for those offended by the list, I capped all bands at 2 songs, hence no more Beatles or Stones, etc

No. It's good but it's ridiculously overrated.

Every song's allowed to be considered, just as every album's allowed to be considered for title of the greatest album ever. And any list without 'International Player's Anthem' is no sort of list at all.

Okay, this is creepy, I was just going to post those exact words. Actually I probably would have written "very" only once and was also going to mention that You Still Believe in Me is as good as God Only Knows but still.

Dude, you can't just make up the fact that there are only certain songs eligible for consideration for the best song ever and then just say that "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" is one of them as though that were acceptable behavior.
