It just occurred to me...pretty much every super group in history (with a very few easily counted exceptions) were not as good as their lineup. Most of them released an album or two, then decided to split up because it didn't work out.

True. Maybe the chemistry of the band is more important in a band than we might think Question

Oh, now wait a second...I can think of a few bands that meet the definition of "supergroup" that have worked out pretty well.

Crosby, Stills & Nash (and sometimes Young)
Asia
Journey
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
Bad Company

Yep. There are a few exceptions. The ones you mention should all be considered fairly low on the super scale though. Neither of those bands can really be compared to having Freddie Mercury on vocals, Eddie Van Halen on lead guitar, and Keith Moon on drums (or, if you prefer, George Harrison on lead guitar, Tom Petty on bass, Jeff Lynne on keyboards, and five egomaniacs jointly on vocals. They made one good album, but one is still just one).

If we're going for sheer musical ability, this is about what mine would look like:

Vocals - Michael Jackson
Guitar - Jimi Hendrix
Drums - Neil Peart
Bass - John Entwistle
Keys - Keith Emerson

Now if it were to be made up of my personal favorites:

Vocals - Cedrix Bixler-Zavala
Guitar - John Petrucci
Drums - Matt Cameron
Bass - John Entwistle
Keys - Kevin Moore

I would love to see this band. live Very Happy

And I would probably buy every album they made

But only after Keith Moon replaced Portnoy on drums
