I love it.
I once would have had a chart crammed with Floyd albums, yet over time with more and more listens, this is the only album that stood the test of time well to me. Sure, it's probably overrated to a certain extent (Although not by much in my opinion, I believe it probably deserves the number 1 spot above OK Computer anyway), but it's a great album. Currently in my top 20 of all time. Deservedly so. _________________

Brilliant album. One of the first I ever heard, as well. I can understand the complaints against it, but I don't see this as being even close to as overblown and self-indulgent as what came after Wish You Were Here (which is also brilliant). Every sound sounds like it belongs, and all of it comes together in this flawless whirlwind of gorgeous instrumentation. It's simply perfect in every sense of the word, in my opinion. One of the few albums in our overall top 10 that is 100% deserving of its position.

Neither is overrated. I have often called DSOTM the most perfect album I've ever heard, but Pet Sounds is easily it's closest competition. Both just incredible albums.

Maybe I should re-listen to Wish You Were Here, because the last time I listened to it I thought it was pompous, pretentious, overblown, self-indulgent, and unenjoyable as hell. But a lot of progressive musicians were self-indulgent (especially the brilliant ones), so I can't exactly use that as an insult.

I love Pet Sounds and Blood on the Tracks and Please Please Me and The Doors and Forever Changes, so why would I pretend not to like The Dark Side of the Moon in an attempt to appear cool? I know your post wasn't specifically aimed at me, but it's not as though everyone who says they dislike this album is doing so in order to be cool. It just isn't for me, for reasons I outlined on the first page of thread. |
You gave reasons other than "It's overrated". It was not aimed at you at all. _________________ May we all get to heaven

Although I'd much rather see albums like Revolver, Pet Sounds, Highway 61 Revisited, or London Calling at the #2 spot over Dark Side of the Moon, DSotM lacks one thing which all those other albums have: flaws. I know lots of people here (myself included to some degree) like "flaws" and inconsistencies when they make an album more interesting, but DSotM and OK Computer are the two albums closest to perfect (that I've ever heard). The production, songwriting, composition, instrumentals, vocals, and lyrics are all great.
That being said, DSotM has never been one of my top favorite albums. It's really amazing every time I listen to it, and I can honestly find nothing wrong, there's nothing I DON'T like about the album, but for some reason I just don't like it as much as a lot of the other albums I've heard, a lot of albums which have songs or moments I don't like.
Anyway, I think I might like The Wall slightly better just because of the story, but DSotM is fantastic.
EDIT: It would appear I might need to make some edits to my chart... _________________ 51 Washington, D.C. albums!

Arguably the most over-rated album of all-time. Up there with Abbey Road and Revolver.
